Sixx Design
Jordan first introduced me to Sixx Design. The super-fabulous husband-wife team of builder/interior designers, Robert and Cortney Novogratz. When they named their company, they had six children. Thus: Sixx Design. Cute! And now, number 7 — named Major Robert Novogratz — arrived on January 20th. Even cuter!
I can't believe how happy it makes me to know about this family. Lots of kids, and they're not letting that stop them from doing interesting things. Inspiring in every way.
I want their book, Downtown Chic: Designing Your Dream Home: from Wreck to Ravishing, It covers all the Sixx Design projects to date — including the completion of their latest house, a six story glass residence on West street facing the Hudson River.
While I wait for the book release, I'll just covet their home in Great Barrington (pics above). Or their home in Brazil:
Oh. Also. Because I find this family endlessly fascinating, I asked their PR rep if I could send them some email questions. And the answer was yes. So if there's anything in particular you'd like me to ask, let me know.

I have 1/2 their number of kids but would like to know "What is one thing that you do with your kids that you would not stop doing - no matter what?"
Id like to know when hanging photos and pictures on a stairwell wall of a two story open foyer, where to begin? What height should pictures be from the rising stairs? I generaling hapng wall art so middle of the picture is about 60-65 inches from the floor. (So my eyes line up at the top 1/3 or 1/4 of the art.) I like BIG art, but photos are different.
yes, ditto. help us in photo arranging, please!
i love sixx design! some questions:
how do they manage/juggle the business and the kids? do they go to school or are they home schooled? how many trips do they take a year and to where? where are their favorite flea markets? how much of the day to day (of both the business AND the kids) do they do themselves and how much help do they have?
AMEN for the picture arranging! I love the photo in the post, but wnat something with a cleaner look. I have a strait staircase that opens to my two-story great room.
Neat family!
I'd like to hear more about their work/ life balance. With a large family and large-scale projects, I'd assume they have plenty of help. Regardless, are there any challenges with making it all work? (and PS - please tell their PR rep that there are multiple spelling errors on the Sixx Design website.)(I guess that just proves that they're not as perfect as they look!).
I've heard that they will move into a house, make it fabulous and then sell it.
I'm wondering how they pick which area to move to and which house to buy next. How do they spot the "diamond in the rough?" Or, what do they look for in a house they're planning on fixing up?
Where do they go for inspiration? What inspires them?
What do they do to create continuity when they move so much?
Thanks!
I'd mainly like to know if I can be their eighth kid. I'm ready to move in whenever. Also, I'm not kidding.
Ha, Con Queso! I will join you if there's room for a ninth!
I would like to know how they keep their furniture so clean with 7 children. Do they have a "just for looks" policy in certain rooms of the house?
I second the questions about raising a passel of children and doing incredible things. Is it a matter of having a nanny? Or housekeeper?
I would really love to know how they pull it off. (I have five kiddos, myself. :o)
yes!
where did they get the amazing rug under those 2 turquoise chairs!?
my question is this: do you keep your children in cages? i see no other explanation for how clean and uncluttered these spaces are.
on a serious note, i would love to learn their secret to keeping the spaces free of *stuff*... is it all stashed away somewhere or do they just have fewer possessions than the rest of us?
2 questions:
What inspires the designs/creativity of the rooms?
How can we hang photos with a variety of unique frames?
yes to photo arranging help like others mentioned! I love that photo wall!
Also, help balancing the fact that their are kids in the home but not wanting to give up a great sense of style in the home. Keeping it kid and adult friendly.
Love it! Proof design and children can mix. Now if I could only copy it for my home!
i'd like to know where they got the the two turquoise chairs! love...
i'd like to know where the UnionJack is from. it seems to travel with them as i've seen it in their new england home and now in their brazil house.
also....as we mums are just born with "guilt" feelings....what is the one thing she feels "guilty" about as a working mother?
I love their use of natural light. I am about to finish an attic area with not much natural light. Is there a way to bring it in with colors/mirrors etc.
I want to know how often do they change their decor?
I would like some tips on decorating a nursery/kids room. We are getting ready to redocorate our son's room so any tips on how to make it a modern, but still feel like a kids room.
