Music — Random Fun Music Picks — by Guest Mom Burgin Streetman
As Huey Lewis sang so poetically all those years ago (yes, we are that old), the heart of rock ‘n roll is still beating. As third generation lovers of that voodoo sound, it is up to us as parents to pass those musical legacies onto our own kids. Picking and choosing what pieces of the puzzle will help them have the right combination of rhythm, soul, and mojo can seem like an endless task, but this is the part of your kids’ childhood where you really get to have fun.
Below is a small play list of must-have adult songs that appeal to kids (some of my son’s faves) and will help them begin building a musical foundation. Plus if you get them hooked on the good stuff early, you won’t have to listen to The Backyardigans theme song EVER AGAIN. Where you go from here is up to you.
1) Blackbird by The Beatles, “The White Album”
2) Wouldn't It Be Nice by The Beach Boys, “Pet Sounds”
3) ABC by The Jackson Five, “ABC”
4) Children Go Where I Send You by Nina Simone, “The Amazing Nina Simone"
5) A Boy Named Sue by Johnny Cash, “Johnny Cash At San Quentin”
6) Brass Monkey by The Beasties Boys, “License to Ill”
7) Picture Book by The Kinks, “The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society”
8) Come On In My Kitchen by Robert Johnson,” The Complete Recordings”
9) Move It On Over by Hank Williams, “20 Greatest Hits”
10) Roly Poly by Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys, “Anthology (1935-1973)
11) Glow Worm by Johnny Mercer
12) Two Headed Boy by Neutral Milk Hotel, “In the Aeroplane Over the Sea”

What a cool blog!
Can I add a name to the list? Jessica Harper - she has a CD of bedtime music (40 Winks) that is wonderful - I love listening to it as much as my 3 kiddos (ages 5 to 5 months).
http://www.amazon.com/40-Winks/dp/B000QQQTO4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dmusic&qid=1214410343&sr=8-1
Other songs my 5 & 3 year-old are loving right now - Lollipop, many of the songs from Dirty Dancing, Weezer....I could go on & on. :)
But we LOVE the Backyardigans theme song! ;)
i actually really do like the backyardigans theme song.... i am such a vintage freak, that is the only contemporary thing I let august watch... and that's only because back in the day I was a hard core lounge lizards fan!
if i had a girl... we would totally be doing our nails and watching dirty dancing right at this moment....
I'm glad to see Neutral Milk Hotel on there... one of my personal faves.
I must say - the Backyardigans are pretty cool for kid shows. Tyone totally rocks Ridin' The Range. My favorite line from that one is when Tasha sings, "in a snappy buckskin vest." But they do cover all different types of music - so aside from encouraging the use of imagination in play, they really do provide somewhat of an introduction to the different music eras/genres. Or that's what I tell myself when I turn on the TV so I can get something done without 3 sets of little hands pulling on me....
tell me about it... we don't have cable so other than what we check out from the library, he has only one Backyardigans DVD, and I am up to my eyeballs in "Castaways"... it is catchy stuff.
Great song list, though my kids prefer "Rocky Raccoon" on the White Album to "Blackbird." My 4 yr old daughter is also quite fond of "Here Comes the Sun" on Abbey Road. She really loves the fast stuff: "Daddy, that song is too slow, play some rock n roll!" I'd add a few songs to that list: Queen (bohemian rhapsody and We are the Champions), couple from The Fratellis (VERY infectious singalong rock n roll), and an assortment of songs from the rolling stones, paul simon, blues brothers, and others. It's also really funny to see my 2 1/2 year old sing "I'm just a love machine, and I don't work for nobody but you (ooh-ooh-oooooh-ya!). Lastly, I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Backyardigans. May be the best kids show around (Arthur, too, which also has a catchy theme song); fav episodes are the Fisherwoman Tasha (disco/funk), Racing Day (Cajun/zydeco, "it's not puppy-chasing day, today's the day we race"), and Surf's Up (surf music, I guess, "Everybody say 'Ho daddy, ho daddy, ho' Surf's up, Surf's up, ho daddy...")
Great recommendations.... really the fun is endless!
I really like some of these suggestions... thanks for this post!
Don't forget jazz tunes by Rosemary Clooney (Come on a my house) and Blossom Dearie (If I were a bell) as well as old musical favourites like "Do re mi" and "Spoonful of sugar".
Is Raffi vintage enough for you? He covers favourites such as "Yellow submarine" and "Day-oh" as well as the usual kiddie tunes and fantastic originals.
We are TV-free house, so I don't know what you're going on with the Backyardigans... but those clever marketers *do* know how to make a tune catchy!
What a great list!! Thanks!
I have the White Album--what a lovely idea!!
We are stuck in the kid-music loop. To me it's better than listening to bickering or complaining, but I do like it when I find a compromise.
We love Broadway, too. The "kid shows" like Little Mermaid, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and Mary Poppins are still enjoyable to me, and I've squeezed Wicked into the rotation as well.
What a great list. Last week I compiled a play list on my iPod for the kids and it almost matches what you have, even down to the Kinks-Picture Book! While the kids have their share of kid cds, they (and I) would much rather listen to Mommy and Daddy's music! My favorite part of the day is when Dad gets home and the kids run to him, "put a record on" as soon as he gets in the door. They all run upstairs, pick out a record, and we rock out during dinner!
I have a 6 & 4 yr old - when my first was a baby, my husband owned a record store... for four years - all my kids heard was old school tunes and new stuff hip enough to put out on record.
We appreciate your playlist. Especially Johnny Cash, being a fellow Arkansan - My kids also recognize and request certain songs from De La Soul, Ella Fitzgerald, Stereolab, Tony Bennett, Camera Obscura, and Billy Bragg.
I guess the best advice we can take and give is to stay true to our tastes and values - don't toss your bands... maybe tweak the tunes... but stay true to your music - the tots will follow.
Another great way to get you kids into music is a Kindermusik class. I used to be an educator and watched kids love of music really grow through a great program...
