A Deliberate Home

If I was to come and take a look at your bookshelves, would their contents give me a pretty good sense of the people in your home?

Sadly, mine would give you a a kind-of pathetic portrait of who I was as a sophomore in college. You can read my ramblings on the topic at NY Metro Parents Blog.

Gabby--

I really like to read your posts on the MP blog. It's fun read all the other things you are thinking about.

I want Ben to come over to my apartment and tell me what my books say about me. That'd be pretty interesting.

Yes, the books in our house are definately US. Because I am not sentimental and like to clean! So I haven't hung on to anything I don't want. I love to look at my favorite shelf of classics.... You would know I love Jane Austen and Jane Erye, and also on my children's bookshelves sit Laura Ingalls Wilder books and Harry Potter. I love to look at our books and feel how much they enrich our lives.

I have been thinking about books so much lately. I really want my children to appreciate great literature instead of pop lit. My tag sale looking list includes a great collection of children's hardbound books.

I usually read a book then pass it on. I just don't like storing books. Patrick disagress completely and has begun to stock up on poetry and classic lit. I'm going to go take a look at my shelf and see if it describes our family.

I just love this idea...

Nothing, to me, is more beautiful that a jumbled up shelf full of books. There was a time in our lives where we even alphabetized, but that was before 2-year olds and their endless desire to pull every book of the shelf.

The great thing about books is that they are so disposable. There aren't many books that I read over and over again, so when my wife and I lend a book out, which we like to do, we just don't really plan on it coming back. Most do, because we have thoughtful friends. But if they don't, no biggie. If we really want to read it again, what's so wrong with a trip to the book store?

I think things have more character when they are acquired naturally from experiences and life than when you deliberately hand pick each item. Maybe books are a little different. Thats what happened to our house and it just seems so contrived.
