Ask Design Mom — Wrapping Paper Sources
Ask Design Mom Question:
My parents (probably by accident) started a tradition of wrapping all my presents in the same wrapping paper every year. I think it was a super sale of a hardware store that was going out of business and they sold their commercial sized wrapping paper roll. I am finally about to run out! Hah! I would like to find a way to have that same paper design reproduced on a new commercial sized roll of wrapping paper for my five month-old. Any sources? As a backup option, any sources for buying commercial sized wrapping paper to start a new design? Thanks — Nicole

What a fun tradition and great question, Nicole. If I was trying to reproduce a roll of wrapping, I would start by taking a sample of the remaining paper to any local printer. They would be able to a) scan and print the paper, b) outsource the work for me to a different printer with correct machinery, or c) direct me toward other printers in my area who could handle printing a commercial size roll. Be aware — this will not be an inexpensive project — but I'm guessing you know that already.
If you decide to start again with a brand new design (a much more economical option), here are some links to online sources that sell commercial-size rolls — Mac Paper, Nu-Era and Gift Wrap Gifts. Good luck on your hunt! I hope you can find/print something wonderful.
What would you advise Nicole, Dear Readers? Any good bulk-size wrapping paper sources? Also, I wonder if I could contact Paper Source and get bulk-rolls of some of the pretty designs above?

I would recommend that she send the design off to Spoonflower (http://www.spoonflower.com/welcome) and get FABRIC printed and then sew some gift bags that can be reused for many, many years with no waste! Spoonflower starts at only $18/yard for quilt weight cotton. I have never used it personally, but know others who have with positive results. Teresa
Paper source's wholesaler is waste not paper. If you have a tax ID number you could order from them. But their bulk is in rolls of two sheets. So I don't know if it would be right for this instance. However, you could order rolls and rolls of the same paper.

Lady Teresa — Nice eco-idea. I have posted about Spoonflower before but have yet to try it. But it sure gets rave reviews.
Yellow Door - Contacting Waste Not Paper is a great idea. I'm guessing at some point the paper is on a roll and then cut into sheets. Maybe Waste Not Paper could get access to the roll and sell one. Definitely worth an email...
My mom placed my brother and my Christmas gifts in nesting gift boxes, then stacked the boxes on top of one another to create a festive tower by the Christmas tree. Each nesting box set had a different pattern, so I always felt special knowing which Christmas tower was mine. I loved that tradition as a child and now, looking back, I think it was great that she was able to reuse the boxes each year.
I used to work for a gift wrap manufacturer- maybe i can help- Most designs are offered in a "ream" size- they are usually only made in a ream when someone orders one- but like a previous poster said- are sold only to retailers. Maybe you have a local stationary shop you like who could order it for you?
If you find a design you like (other than the beautiful choices from paper source) just check the copyright on the label or sometimes printed along the edge of the wrap for the manufactuerer. You could maybe contact them for a catalog- or see who they sell to locally who could help you. I think your best bet would be asking the owner of a local stationary shop for help.
I also have to add- I can't imagine choosing 1 wrapping paper design for life!! I design giftwrap for a living- so please don't everyone do this- i'll be out of business!
I do suppose if I did have to choose one- I would attend the National Stationary Show in NYC in may- then I would have nearly every manufactuer in the states to choose from!
Allow yourself to give up this tradition! Who wants the same wrapping paper all the time!! :)
