Staten Island Ferry
I hope you will indulge me as I report on more of our last-month-of-adventures-in-New York. On Saturday, we made a trip to the very southern most tip of the island. It was time to say our goodbyes to the Statue of Liberty. I'm not sure if it could have been any windier. But it didn't matter. The views from the Staten Island Ferry — of the Statue and the downtown skyline — are incredible. I think it's my favorite free activity in the city.
After our ferry ride, we picked up lunch at Shake Shack. It was supposed to be our farewell to Shake Shack as well, but the food is just too darn good. We decided we needed at least one more visit before we move.

When we were leaving that area, the Ferry was big on our "last time" list. It's such a great thing to do with kids. I'd start on the State Island side & we'd use Battery Park as our destination. . .sometimes just to play in the fountains.
The Ferry is also a great place to get cheap beer. Just a little added bonus to the great views of the city and Lady Liberty.
My free favorite too. We can't wait to welcome you guys to CO! All the free parking rocks.
I once stood in line for over an hour at the Shake Shack. And it was worth it.
good lord, their burgers look so good. i want one!
Ah...I remember doing the Staten Island Ferry "tour" as a kid. Always thought it was very cool that some people see that every.single.day on their commute! Hubby and I did the same jaunt this summer (on a trip compliments of Hallmark!)
You've inspired me... My daughter is on her spring recess, and now, in addition to going to the Botanical gardens, Wave Hill, Storm King and Dia Beacon, we'll be going to catch a ride on the Staten Island Ferry!
I am responding to your comment, "I hope you will indulge me..." It is only an indulgence for your readers. I love hearing about your adventures with your family...you are designMOM after all" Thank you for sharing and giving inspiration...
Thank you, thank you for this inspiration! We are planning a spring break trip from Boston to Pennsylvania and were hoping to stop in NYC for a day. It looks like we could actually park on Staten Island for $5.00 (!!!), take the ferry to Manhattan, have a blast in the city for the day, take the ferry back and be on our way. I plan to search your archives for other fun family activities to do in NYC.
I haven't been on the ferry in years, but now I want to go on it too! ♥
