Ask Design Mom Week: Sew in Labels

Question:

Hi Gabrielle! I am new to sewing and I am loving making special gifts for friends and family. I would really like to have some sew-in labels made to attach to my gifts but I am having trouble finding a good source that is reasonable for the home sewer. I am a graphic designer, so I could design the label myself, but don't know how to have it made. Thanks for your help. — Marcy

Answer:

Oh my Marcy. Now that you mention it, I think I want some too. I did a quick google search and it looks like there are lots of options out there, but having never placed an order for these, I'd love to hear some feedback first. Dearest Design Mom Readers, do you have any trusted sources on custom sew-in labels?

I buy my labels from customcouturelabelcompany.com They do a WONDERFUL job of working with you and will use any font, color, and even art work on the labels if you want. They also have a nice range of prices and label sizes. I love them!

I like how "separately" was spelled wrong. Ha ha.

My husband got me some labels from a designer on etsy for Valentine's Day. I LOVE them. He told her I liked poppies and she designed them around that. Her shop is Mommie Made It. She is very reasonable and the labels are beautiful!

Northwest Tag and Label does small runs and has lots of sizes and materials to choose from.

I've always used fancyweaver.com for small runs of labels. I think they have 200 two color woven labels for $39.99 with free shipping.

I have also used Mommiemadeit on etsy, but prefer Jennifersjwewels. I've had JennifersJewels make labels for me a couple of times. They look great and are inexpensive.
There are lots of sellers on etsy and I imagine they all have something great to offer. And buying there versus a big company helps out the little people like us.

Another option...I too am a graphic designer, and aspiring seamstress - I design my own custom labels, then print on tshirt transfer paper, iron the transfer to a solid cream or white fabric, then sew the tag into a seam. I've only done it where I've sewn it in on the front of an object, so I press the edges under, but not sure that it would work well if just attached on one end as a traditional tag. This works well for me as I only have an occasional need for tags, and I like to alter the design to fit the piece. Good luck!

I have bought labels from Mommy Made It also. They were just what I wanted and very affordable. You can send her your own design, but the labels are small, so keep it simple.

One thought if you are looking for a super cheap DIY alternative is to try making your own labels with T-shirt transfer paper. If you do it right, it's very durable and can be custom made.

Yes, it is much fun to have your own labels. It adds so much flair and professional look to your creations. I have two different sized labels I use (they can be seen here: http://dana-made-it.blogspot.com/2009/02/country-girl.html)
And I ordered them from a company called:
clothinglabels4u.com

They were very easy to work with and the labels turned out just as I had hoped. The smallest quantity you can order is 250 but if you are a crafter or sewer, you'd be surprised by how many of these you will end up using!

My sister designed the labels and logo in Illustrator. Then we emailed them to the label making company with the particular Pantone color codes.
And they shipped the labels to me the next week! I was very pleased with the results and will use them again in the future. Sorry for the long answer. Good luck with your ventures!

I'm thinking of ordering some labels from this ebay seller who's a Canadian ex-pat living in Beijing with good relationships with some factories there. Seems like .10/each for a custom label is better than any other price I've seen.
