Design Discussion
Last week, I attended an event put on by Slate and VW — a discussion of What is Good Design Now? with panelists: Paula Scher, Ahmad Sardar-Afkhami and Jonathan Adler, Moderated by Adam Gopnik. A few of the topics that were brought up: the Tropicana redesign, cars, the current increase in design awareness among the general population, and the Coke, Pepsi and Obama logos.
It was held in the Museum of Arts and Design auditorium, with a reception following on the 7th floor, where there were perfect views of Columbus Circle. I couldn't get enough of the discussion. I wish it had been twice as long. The whole event was beautiful. It made me happy. I wanted to speak one-on-one with every member of the audience. And I have to say, Paula Scher is so knowledgeable and has such respect for her field, I could listen to her talk about design all day long.
You can see excellent pics from the event here. You can see video of excerpt of the discussion here.
Also. Do you think about design more often today than you did 5 years ago? What do you think is Good Design Now?

I absolutely think about it more. I'm not exactly sure why - I do think there is heightened awareness of it by the general public, thanks in large part to the Internet. But I have also become more aware of it because I have been inspired by good design and studied up on it myself. As an avid scrapbooker my number one goal is to have a good design to my layouts. To me, good design is balance and harmony and a reflection of nature... if that makes any sense!
I think about it more now, possibly because of design classes in school and feeling like I am finally able to fully apply what I learned in my own life. I love design, especially good design. It makes me smile. Good design is comfortable, clean, simple and inviting. Good design for me should out last skinny jeans and look good for a long time to come. Thank you for sharing about the discussion. I am awfully curious now.
I have a background in graphic design and I'm currently a user experience designer so I am constantly aware of design and the impact it has on everyone's life. I believe design is everywhere and things are either poorly designed or designed well.
Good design simplifies our lives and allows us to live better and work efficiently. Good design seems simple, is useful, and often makes people say "why didn't I think of that?"
Design is more current now than five years ago. I have no formal background in this arena, yet I am drawn to it. So I think of good design as a necessity, especially in trying times, rather than a luxury. What do you think?
I think good design is something that gives us peace and contentment with our surroundings. Whether it's because the design is more functional, or just visually pleasing, good design enriches our lives. I think about it more than I used to because I think it's more of a necessity to me in order to live a peaceful life; also one that's beautiful to me.

I have been noticing that a lot more of the same design ideas are being played by many ppl at once.
The script fonts and *swirly* patterns have always been a favorite of mine, but I am almost getting tired of them now (so sad for me)...
they are getting played out. Kohl's flyers, Macy's advertisements, ugh...
Can anyone try uniqueness anymore?
One thought I have about design and the internet is that now people with similar interests can connect so much more easily. And that makes design ideas flow faster and also become more ubiquitous. I think that the pace that design will evolve will move much faster now due to a somewhat overwhelming amount of images we all receive through the constant onslaught of media we are exposed to.
