Krypto the Superdog — by Guest Mom Sara Stratford
My daughter has been planning her Krypto the Superdog birthday party since January, and it’s finally happening on Saturday. The invitations have been mailed, and the pinata purchased. I love the ideas Design Mom readers come up with, and wanted to get feedback on the activities I have planned and hopefully add to them.
I thought as the guests arrive, we’d have episodes of Krypto playing on our TV. Each guest will be given a Krypto collar to wear, handcrafted by me from elastic and Superman rings I purchased online:
Once everyone has arrived, we’ll go into the kitchen to make Krypto doghouses. I stole this idea from my friend Angie. I’ll make them out of graham crackers ahead of time, and have cans of frosting with candy in bowls on the table for the kids to decorate. We did a test run of the houses over spring break, by making Easter bunny houses. Here’s how they turned out:
After the houses are done, we’ll head to the dark, scary basement to hunt for kryptonite sticks. I bought these glow sticks and sunglasses from Oriental Trading, and we’ll hide them ahead of time. The kids will have to wear their sunglasses while they search for them downstairs:
Then we’ll play a few games, like “I have a Little Present”. I also love the game where you tie balloons onto each child’s leg and they try to pop each other’s balloons... or if it’s warm I might fill the balloon with water and do a balloon toss. After the kids tire of the games, we’ll come back to the table to eat. I’m thinking pizza and some veggies, and some kind of super juice to drink. Of course we’ll also serve up Scooby snacks.
I’m planning to make the cupcakes, using the old tried and true Magnolia Bakery recipe:
Cupcakes
1 stick unsalted butter
1 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
2 eggs
3/4 cup self-rising flour
1/2 cup + 2 tablespoons regular flour
1/2 cup milk
1. Cream butter and sugar. Add the vanilla. Add the eggs, one at a time.
2. Mix the flours, then add the milk, in thirds (a third of the flour, then a third of the milk, etc).
Bake at 350 for 20-22 minutes.
Icing
1 stick unsalted butter
4 cups powdered sugar
3 - 4 tablespoons milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
Mix all together, adding milk until you reach desired texture.
Frost cupcakes with liberal amount of frosting after they are completely cool.
I bought fondant in primary colors, and am planning to cut out dog bone shapes to top each cupcake. Luckily I found the perfect sized dog bone cookie cutter a few months ago. I had also considered getting this dogbone shaped cake pan, but decided cupcakes were easier. Does anyone have any better ideas?
After they are done eating, I’ll have a Krypto treasure hunt ready for them. There will be clues all over the house that will end up outside where the pinata is hanging. I got these dog dishes (25 cents each!) from Ikea to put the bounty in when the pinata bursts.
I have a tendency to over plan, but I’m worried I won’t be able to fill the entire two hours. What other ideas do you have? If the kids have a dog dish full of candy and prizes, a kryptonite stick and sunglasses, the dog collars, and their graham dog houses, do I need to do goodie bags too? I’d really love to hear your input.

It sounds like a fabulous party. I wouldn't do an additional gift bag, sounds like plenty of loot to me!
I say no, you don't need an additional gift bag, and I don't think you will run out of things to do. I always keep in mind that if worse comes to worse, we can always do things like duck duck goose...just change the words. It sounds like she'll have a great party!
I agree you don't need a goodybag but I do think the candy might spill out of the dog dish when the kids carry it home! maybe you need some kind of bag...this sounds like the cutest party ever! I hope you'll post results...
I agree with the others who say you don't need anymore goodies. I think we moms ought to stop cursing each other by giving away so much stuff at parties - not only is there constantly a ton of teeny-tiny toys showing up at our house, but there's all sorts of pressure to give away more and more when you are hostess. I think what you have sounds GREAT! And the one thing I would do is plan one more game. I always plan about two too many games, so when the kids breeze through everything really fast, we have something to do! Sounds like you are going to have a great time!
Sounds like a delightful party! I am exhausted for you already.
You could keep in mind a game like "Red Rover", but I think you have plenty of activities planned. What a great party theme! I keep thinking of the ending of Go, Dog, Go: It's a dog party! A big dog party!
I don't think you need an additional goody bag, but you could provide brown paper sacks to use as "doggie bags" to bring all the loot home in, placed inside the dog dish.

has some fun game ides and you can search by age, I think. I think you've done a great job and those kids are going to go home with some serious booty.
Maybe you could have them test their superhuman strength if you run out of time by seeing who can do the most (if any) pushups and jump the highest and those things. Wear them out before you send them home...
Clever, clever. Love your ideas!
I think your daughter and her friends are in for a wonderful party! Great ideas. I have been musing on the dog biscuit cookie cutter...you could make some place name cards with them using them as a template.
As hard as it is for a creative mind to know where a good stopping point is (lol) I think you've planned enough. And it sounds like they will have plenty goodness to take home with them too... kudos on turning even a toon theme into soemthing fun and unique!
I just completed a bday party myself and was happy with the result of planning half as much as usual. :)
Yes. That sounds like it will be a fab party. Those kids won't need another thing with all those fun things you'll be giving them already.
I love the idea of the dog house. So clever! And cupcakes are perfect for kids. The right size and most kids love 'em.
Great to see you posting this week, Sara. I love birthday parties. This one looks like it's going to be a lot of fun.
great input everyone, thanks! so a few games planned just in case (duck duck goose is great; we can say different words that are appropriate) and no goodie bags. phew. i like the idea of having bags on hand for the pinata loot as well.
thank you thank you!
Holy smokes! Wish I was a kid again as birthday parties these days are so cool! I'm with everyone else, sounds like you've got enough going on already. Great ideas!
I wanna come, too!
Loving the dog theme - another craft activity (that you don't need, btw): guests could make their own Dog Tag necklaces. You remember the old school copper things that you hammer your name into with metal letters and a little hammer?
I did a dog party once for my 3 year old. The kids took home the dog collar, dog ears, dog dish and cardboard dog house. I got lots of parents' comments that it was the best party ever. Kids were occupied by just eating out of the dog dish (I used cocoa pebbles) and playing fetch with ball pit balls. So no...you don't need another goody bag. They have more than enough to distract them.
It is wonderful to see how much effort was put in to this party. My son will turn four in June and he wants a Krpyto party. I had no idea where to even begin because Krypto isn't easily available, or at least at a decent price. I had grappled with the idea of incorporating it in to a Superman party but this gives me hope. I had come up with similar ideas and hope it goes as well as yours.
