The Great Rocking Chair Debate — by Guest Mom Sara Stratford
Seven years ago, when my daughter was born, my mom came out to help take care of her. Travis and I had only been in our apartment for a month, and had failed to buy a crib, dresser, or the all-important rocking chair. Truth be told, we weren’t that excited about buying a rocker. But our infant was less than a week old, and we were exhausted. We had left her home with Nana on an adventure to Buy Buy Baby, and after picking out the crib and dresser, found ourselves each in a glider with matching ottoman. After lulling ourselves into a stupor (I think this took all of 2 seconds), he looked over at me and said, “Well, they aren’t very cool looking but they sure are comfortable.” Nana had been pushing hard for a rocking chair, so we broke down and bought one.
We lugged that thing with us to Brooklyn, and found a spot for it in our 500 square foot apartment. Then it came with us to our next apartment. I used it less and less, and then one day a tear in the seat cushion began sprouting stuffing. I started looking at replacing the cushions; imagine my horror when I found out new cushions could cost up to 400 bucks! Even the cheapest set of cushions were around $200. We decided instead to give it to a friend who had a new baby (and was crafty enough to sew new cushion covers) and used our money instead to purchase a train table. It nicely filled the spot where the rocker had lived, and I never looked back.
Fast forward several years and the arrival of baby #3 is imminent. Nana is insisting on a rocking chair, but now I find the idea of a classic glider appalling. What has happened to me? Every rocker I look at makes me want to run out of the room screaming. Why can’t they make these chairs better looking?
I’ve found a few that I think could work. But I’d really love some input from the rest of you... hopefully there is a perfect rocking chair that will merge form and function enough to please both my mom and I. Here are the ones I’m liking so far. Let me know what you think:
I like how simple this one is, and cheap! Plus the cushions are so basic, maybe I could get slipcovers made for them, once I decide what color the nursery will be. I saw this first at Erin’s, and she had dyed the cushion covers brown. It looked great, so I could try that too... although my RIT dying skills are pretty lacking.
I love the look of the Eames rocker; it’s a classic. But it doesn’t look so cozy for nursing in the middle of the night. Nothing would be worse than the shock of cold plastic when it’s 2 am.
This one is super cool, but way too pricey. I’d love to find something along these lines, but in the $300 range.
I love this rocker more than anything. But somehow it seems like a bad idea to buy a chair you’d be afraid to let a baby near. What if he spit up on it? I think I’d cry.
Design Mom readers, help me! What kind of rockers do you have? What kind should I buy? Or should I just give up and invest my money in more Thomas the Tank Engine stuff?

We just have the classic glider rocker, and as the mother of 4 kids, we have used it constantly. You definately need a rocker with a new baby. Since the IKEA one is so cheep and babies destroy things, I would lean toward that one. However, I have short legs and it looks like it would be a hard one to get an easy rocking motion going in.
We have a rocking loveseat and yes we used it all the time!
I'm a fan of the wide gliders. Gliders may not look cool, but they require so little effort when it comes to rocking. Also the wide ones are great...they make nursing a snap(allowing you to relax your arms with baby comfy in one the those boppy pillows).
Don't feel bad about not having a rocker. Four kids and 9+ years later I still do not have one, same dilemma, never could find one I LOVED. Plus, they are hard to sleep in when nursing at 2 a.m. The couch is much more conducive to slouching in and catching a few Z's while nursing! But I do love that Ikea one and a cover might be easily and cheaply made(I know that's easier said than done esp. for me - a non-sewer.) Good luck.
I don't have any kids, but I have a lot of experience with rocking chairs. My mom has almost always preferred a rocking chair above all other pieces of furniture. Seriously, my mom sits in a rocking chair at her computer! So, growing up I was either in her lap in a rocking chair, or in my own kid-size rocking chair. I think the Ikea one would be a perfect fit. Ikea furniture tends to me smaller, and since cheaper and nuetral would probably allow for the most customization. The others are beautiful, but probably not as kid friendly.
I love the IKEA one, and with an adjustable back and removeable covers it sounds pretty good! Question is.....is it comfortable? since you would be nursing at night etc... I wonder if the arms are comfy. Just my input!
If you will be nursing, I think you need a rocker that has a higher back so your head has a place to rest. We got the classic glider with baby #1 7+ years ago, it's been thru 3 kids, and now that my "baby" is no longer a baby, I'm moving it into our room. I love it. It was the best "baby" item we purchased.
We have an overstuffed rocking chair we got at Restoration Hardware when my oldest was born almost seven years ago--it's made by Mitchell Gold, and it's the same one Pottery Barn Kids has sold as the Lullaby Rocker. The slipcover is starting to look a little spotty (it's pale yellow), but it's been an absolute godsend. Comfortable arms, high enough to rest my head back, and I even slept in it with number two when he was tiny and his reflux was bad (with my feet up on my bed to tilt us back some, and the comforter over my legs).
Anyway, my point is that it's more expensive than you're looking for right now, but ours has been worth every penny. Maybe your mom would chip in?
I actually have a pair of the ikea rockers. We love them. The cushion covers are so inexpensive to replace and in Blueprint magazine they actually have a project to recover that specific rocker's cushions. I believe it's three yards of fabric.
Love the rocker. A must have for babies in my opinion.
I would stay away from the eames...if you plan to spend a lot of time in the rocker, it must be comfy.
Pottery Barn has some nice upholstered ones. not sure if they are in the 300 dollar range, but they are nice.
We found an antique upholstered one and reupholstered it ourselves. The good thing about antique ones is the creak!!
Good luck finding the perfect one!
We've owned the Ikea one, and it's probably my favorite piece of Ikea furniture. Very well made with wonderful proportions. It's so deep, that I think it's most comfortable with two are three throw pillows. And at that price, you can hire a seamstress to make new cushion covers.
But it's rocking motion is very slight. And it actually has a fairly big footprint for one piece of furniture.
Then again, the Jason Lewis rocker is so beautiful. I say just go for it.
Oh boy! I just emailed Design Mom about my rocking chair dilemma. I can't stand the way those gliders look. I'd seen that Ikea rocker before, but I wasn't sure how practical it would be. Dying that cushion cover would be a breeze! Once Ikea is finished being built I'm going to go check this rocker out.
I think I would forget the rocking chair all together and get a nice chaise lounge type chair with two arm rests. I have an antique rocking chair that I love, but is super uncomfortable to nurse in. Well, maybe you just want a rocking chair for rocking, and then I say get the first one b/c I love it. Although....I like soft arm rests, which come in handy when your baby starts to leap from your arms and smack his tiny head on the hard, wooden armrest. I say get the one you want. Jenni is right, I usually end up on the couch or in my bed with my baby anyway.
I recommend a big comfortable one! One that while you snuggle that cooing baby you too can cuddle up in. There are many time when all that little one will want is to be held and when you are so tired you can hardly think, a good comfy rocker does the trick.
Kindof like this one except I have no idea how much it costs! The cool thing is you get to pick out your own fabric and it could match anything you want.
It's kind of too bad that the current look in furniture is sleek. Some great looks, but I have loved the over-stuffed rocker that both mother and child can snuggle into, with room or padded arms for other children to join you.
PS: If you're a mom without a rocker, I say, go get one. You'll be glad.
I have been on a modern glider/rocker search for almost four years (DS is three and we have a new one now.) We have a traditional rocking chair but I haven't used it with DS #2 yet. I actually found some incredible modern design glider-rocker-recliners manufactured by Palliser a couple months ago. Naturally, I can't find a link now, but if I do I'll re-comment. They were beautifully designed and I wish I could afford one.
Oh, a couple other ideas:
The Rocco from Pier One--it might even be on sale right now as I know they're having a big clearance. You'd probably have to use a nursing pillow with The Rocco.
My friend Creede over at GrassRoots Modern had a great suggestion: Find a chair that you like and then have a rocking base put on to it. An upholstery shop could do it, or so could you if you're handy. Perfect for those inexpensive chairs from Overstock.com.
Also checkout this option from Apt http://www.apt-ny.com/furniture/david/index.htm
Somewhat still in the price range and design.
Melissa has a GREAT one, find out where she got it. (If I was home, I'd find out for you.)
Sara, I was afraid you weren't going to ask opinions on rockers. When I checked Friday and just saw the post on hoodies, I thought you had forgotten. Hopefully you'll find one that you like, at least sort of, and is COMFORTABLE for nursing and rocking wee ones. You don't have much time!! Of course I will chip in on the rocking chair. Remember I did buy the first one. I've sat in the Eames rocker and it is NOT comfortable, and looks like a 7th grade shop project.
I just came across a great rocking chair that is also cute and inexpensive ($159) for all you moms.
it can be seen at Gardener's Supply Company and comes in white or yellow.

It's a "porch rocker" but has great shape and style.
we invested in a luca glider from montedesign.net and absolutely love it!!! much better than any rocker we tried out, and it is so comfy!
Just wanted to say: Nana is hilarious
I have no idea how old these posts are, but we just got pregnant after trying for a long time. We saw chair after chair and pictured ourselves rocking in them... Now that it worked and the baby is on the way I can't find any of the cool ones we used to see everywhere. The glider action makes my wife motion sick and they're usually so ugly. Thanks for all of the links, why is such an important item so hard to find?
I got the Nursery Works Sleepytime Rocker for way less than the $600 instead of the $900 list price. Check around online. The quality is great, the design is clean and the upholstery (I got ecru microsuede) is awesome. Worth it.
