Brandi Carlile
What was your first concert, Dear Readers? Mine was Morrissey in Las Vegas. I was 16.
Tomorrow night, we'll be taking our 3 oldest (Ralph, Maude & Olive) to their first concert. Brandi Carlile. We used Christmas money from Grandma to buy the tickets — so thank you, Grandma!
Ben Blair and I saw Brandi in New York last year. We loved it and we're really looking forward to tomorrow night. We can't wait to see what the kids think of the concert. It's sold out — which seems like a good sign. Here's one of her songs that you might recognize. And here's one of our favorites from her new album:
What about you? Any plans for this weekend? Any first concert memories?
Edit: I was thinking about concerts and just remembered. I saw The Jets in St. George when I was 14. My dad gave me tickets for my birthday. Remember Crush on You?

Ok, you can block me from your readership now as I admit I have never been to a concert. Unless you count Peter Brineholt? Or a guest appearance by Ryan Shupe and the Rubber Band... before they were on the radio.
Ok, I'm just lame.
first concert: u2 in denver when i was 17. i wish i could say it was someone as cool as morrissey! that's awesome.
and i think it's so cool that you're taking your kids to a concert. maybe when mine are a little older...
brandi carlile is a great singer, even better songwriter in my opinion, hope you have lots of fun at the concert!
I love your blog and all that you share! I also LOVE that you're a Brandi Carlile fan. I absolutely looove her! I don't normally comment on things, but this I just couldn't resist! My dear friend gave me tickets to see her in Dallas in March and I can't wait. I've seen her twice before and she totally rocked both times. My 3-year old really wants to go with me. I told him maybe next time. Rock on, Brandi fans!
Oh, my first concert was Indigo Girls my senior year in high school. I love them, too!
a) I heart Brandi...muchly.
b) My first concert was when I was 11...that was the summer my brother and sister and I fell in love with The Monkees...so naturally when they did a reunion tour, we were there. Weird Al opened for them...it was brilliant.
Incubus, freshman year of high school. I was *so in love* with Brandon Boyd, the lead singer... my friend Jamie and I spent the entire concert drooling over him.
I don't know why that inspires giggles 11 years later. I think it's finally become apparent how much of a dork I was back then!
I took my 1 year old to an outdoor Emmy Lou Harris and Gillian Welch concert....she just soaked up the atmosphere and danced. We then took her to a Wilco concert when she 4, again she loved it. I think it is so important to take your kids to soak up different experiences. They are going to love it. I wish my parents had taken me to concerts when I was younger. My first "real" concert was Blur and Pulp - so great!
Love Brandi!
My first real concert-- huge venue-- was Ben Harper and Jack Johnson hollywood bowl. It was amazing.
My first concert was: ELVIS! The real Elvis. I'm not even kidding.
I was drug against my will to NKOTB and TIffany when I was 14. And I hated every dang minute of it. I make up for this with the fact that The Hooters were my dad's opening band and so, techincally, they held a concert for us every week at rehersal.
Still, NTOKB. Humiliating, at best.
Mine was U2's Joshua Tree at the Miami Orange Bowl. I was 12. My older sister and cousin took me. I have never been a huge concert goer but my sister always has and I appreciate her draggin me along. I feel lucky to have had that musical experience.
Have fun at the concert!
My first concert was Billy Joel at the Tacoma Dome (maybe 1990?). My most recent concert...Depeche Mode in 2009 in Stuttgart, Germany. Have a wonderful time with your kids.
My first concert was The Cure my freshman year. It will be a few years before I take my kids to a concert. The Wiggles concert doesn't count. :)
I was five years old and I saw Laura Branigan. Since then I've probably been to around 100 concerts. I guess my mom didn't know how addicted I would become to concerts.
Have fun at the show.
Melanie - your comment made me smile. I think Peter Breinholt and Ryan Shupe totally count! : )
jomama - I'm thinking U2 is the best first concert ever. Except it makes all the concerts you see afterward kind of pale in comparison. It's the coolest.
Lacey - Thank you for the sweet comment. So glad you get to see Brandi in Dallas. Yay for Brandi!!
Sufoot - I love your Monkees story.
Carter - Incubus? Holy cow. Bringing back memories.
hannah - I totally agree. Kids love all sorts of music.
Yellow Door - Ben Harper at Hollywood Bowl would be fantastic. I bet you had so much fun.
John Denver...I think I was 12. Wishing I was posting this anonymously....
Girl con Queso - For reals? How did I not know you saw Elvis in person? What a story.
Mr. Lady - I remember being forced into a NKOTB lip sync in high school with the student council. Hard times.
Denise Laborde - Yay for pushy sisters that drag us along on adventures.

I love Brandi! So amazing. My first concert was the Red Hot Chilli Peppers and they were awesome :). Set a high standard for all future concerts!

I love these posts. (and the Indigo Girls too). My first concert was Rick Springfield at Worlds of Fun in KC. "Jessie's Girl"
So awesome! Have a great time.
Tears for Fears was my first on my 13th birthday.
My husband just took my son to his first... KISS!
Chelle - you are kidding me! My parents loved the Kingston Trio. I know all their songs. I saw them in concert with all my siblings right after I married.
My favorite is Lemon Tree.
OMG ... Jackson 5, probably when I was 9 or 10 (so long ago I'm not sure)
BTW Gabby, thanks for the reminder of what my hair looked like in 1986 (The Jets). At least I can say I never owned a pair of pants like that! LOL
My first concert was Michael Jackson during the Thriller years. I was in the 1st or 2nd grade, and my mind was thoroughly blown. My baby brother was there too, clinging to my leg in terror. It was great!
I am digging this. I need to add it to my "Wants" list that I keep on my desktop.
My first concert was when I was 18, the Toadies in San Antonio. Funny, come to think of it, the last concert I went to was last year in San Antonio, also the Toadies. Best concert ever! Oy, I could go on and on about it, but I'll stop.
The Beach Boys in LA when I was 12. It was so fun, until I and all my 7th grade friends noticed that our creepy woodshop teacher was sitting in front of us. Icky. :)
My mom took me to Peter, Paul, and Mary when I was about seven. All I remember is I wore magenta corduroy pants, and my mom let me chew gum. I didn't go to another concert until I saw Guster when I was 18. I think it will be so fun to take my kids to concerts when they get old enough.
My first concert was Bon Jovi. I was 16 and it was me and my twin sister's first trip to London on our own! I took a few years off from going to gigs while I had a young family, but funnily enough the first concert after my hiatus was Brandi Carlile's first show in London...and I've been to every single one since! I know your kids will love it, she's a favourite in our house.
Our eldest child loves music and we had to promise him as we left to see a Muse concert a couple of months ago that we would take him with us next time!
Have a great time! I <3 Brandi live. I've seen her several times and she's a lot fun :)
I totally loved Crush on You and my first concert was the Jets too w/the Girl Scouts at the Mpls Metrodome. Followed a few years later with Bryan Adams. Love the memories!
Andy Gibb at the Salt Palace - trying to be like my older cousin.
Most recent - Bruce in Portland, wishing I was in Jersey.
Have fun! My first concert was The Bangles.
Sting, at 15 :)
I love these last couple of "a few things" posts. So much fun. Have fun at the concert!
First concert: New Kids on the Block when I was about 7. But I count my REAL first as CSNY for my 16th birthday.
I saw Brandi for free at Taste of Chicago one summer..she's one of my favorites!
My first concert ever was Billy Joel and Elton John together at Busch Stadium in St. Louis. I was 15. Like jomama, I wish I could say it was someone cooler, but I'm willing to say it's cooler than The Jets, though I remember and love that song!
1983, The Police, Synchronicity tour...I was 13. A great introduction to concerts, you can't beat live music. Flock of Seagulls and The Fixx were the openers. What a crack-up!
Saw their reunion tour in 2007 at Fenway Park here in Boston---24 years later, now THAT'S amazing!
April 17, 1984. San Diego,CA. Duran Duran. Age? 15.
:)
Hey! I remember that Morrissey concert!!! Good times!! Have fun at the concert:)
What a great post! I believe my first one was taking my mom (for her birthday) to see Elton John @MSG sometime during my high school years. Last one I attended was Incubus @Radio City.
my first was Destiny's Child when I was 14 - SO proud to admit that... totally still love them! : )
My first concert was U2 during their Zoo Tv tour. Sopomore in high school at Mile High Stadium in Denver. We had FLOOR seats and were super close to the stage and right by the catwalk that came out into the crowd. At times we were 15 feet away from Bono. AND--those amazing seats were $32.00. I remember that being a lot for my parents to cough up for me. Took some convincing.
My first concert was Bob Dylan when I was 15. My uncle took me to Dallas to see him after I begged and begged. I've now seen him a total of 7 times.
Brandi is the best! I once drove from SLC to Boise and back in one day just to see her play. I got to meet her after the show and she signed my vinyl. I love her raw voice. Have so much fun! I hope the kids love it!
My first concert was Bryan Adams in Las Vegas in 1986. I went with my mom and sister. It was awesome.
Debbi Gibson when I was 12. So hardcore.
The Doors. In Covina at the Carousel Theatre. For my 10th birthday.
I rather think, from a mature viewpoint that I got a contact high from it.
(No, my parents did NOT know I went. They thought I was at an 'Up With People' Rock Gospel thing.)
HOW WAS IT? I looooovvvveee Brandi and the band. We're bringing the kids for the first time in March. How did yours like the show????
Whitney Houston--I was maybe 11?
My husband just bought this for me Monday because he knew I was mad at him.
I love Brandi
I saw her for the first time at the Fox in Boulder. Besides me and my friend there were only 3 other people there. The next year I went back to see her again and the place was PACKED. She is amazing and I'm so stoked that she's making it big.
My first concert?
NKOTB
(New Kids on the Block)
