Thomas Filicia Book
Remember Queer Eye for the Straight Guy? My favorite of the fab five was always Thom Filicia. I liked them all. But for sure Thom had the biggest job. So he was most impressive.
Anyway. Thom has a book out called Thom Filicia Style. It's brand new. And I'm loving it. He's funny and practical and has great ideas. Lots of good tips. Like tip #9: Don't let your house boss you around:
"More times than I can count, I've visited prospective clients who never cook and never entertain yet have a fully decorated, pristine dining room. It's an incredible waste of space that would work so much better if it could be converted into a home office, library/den, or family/media room.... Just because an architect wrote "guest bedroom" on a blueprint back in the day doesn't mean that's how a space should be used."
Isn't that fantastic? What a smart guy.

Oh I love Thom! Did they take his show design nest away? I loved watching that even more than Q.E. which was so great too.
that is SO true! must buy book.
Amen. I've been using my "Dining Room" as an office/piano room/craft area for years. Might not be pretty but it is practical. I'm thinking about changing my laundry room into a mud room/kids storage area with wooden lockers, etc. Who says laundry can't be done in the garage!
I LOVE Thom. You are absolutely right - he definitely had the most creative challenge in that he was designing an actual environment. You can throw out the free skincare products and never wear those clothes Carson picked out - but your living room is your living room. He really did have a great feel for what those straight guys wanted/needed. And he was such a sweetie.
I loved all the Queer Eye guys. I think they single handedly got me through my post partum depression after my first pregnancy. It was just a few weeks - but really intense. And watching Queer Eye reruns every day somehow made me feel so much better. I totally forgot about that until recently...
I love this! We recently bought a home that had a dining room right in the front, we didn't want/need a dining room, and have since turned the room into a family study. I love it. I have 2 small children, and it is right in the middle, out in the open, and I can see and hear everything that is going on. I have often wondered if we made the right choice, so I'm glad to hear that I did not let my house boss me around! :)
Just found out: Thom is keeping a blog over at this site:
