New Year's Pie
It feels really, really good to be sitting at my desk, writing a blog post. It felt good to send the kids on the bus this morning. I'm craving routine and distraction and first work day of 2009 feels good.
It's been an emotional holiday break. I know I told you about Grandma Daisy's death. Then, on January 2nd, Grandma Rudi wrote to let us know that Grandpa Charlie had died — of alzheimers and old age. It's kind of a lot.
Death is hard. But starting off a new year by reflecting on family and heritage is okay by me. Thinking about my Grandparents names always makes me smile. Rudi & Charlie. Daisy & Ralph. Lucille & Lloyd. Great names!
(Craving traditional everything, I made a pie on New Year's Eve. I love this shot Ben Blair took of me building the crust.)

I'm sorry your family is having to deal with two deaths so close together.... No doubt some good things will be headed your way soon. :)
I'm sorry to hear about your grandparents. Their names are lovely, and both names we have chosen for our next little one are in that list.
I have a Dorothy, Arthur, Leah and Claude. Patrick's Grandma was Elvira. Love it!
I love the picture of your hands. Your children will treasure it.
So Sorry to read of your losses.
I'm sorry for your losses. Your reflection on your grandmother Daisy was lovely, and how wonderful that you have her ring as a special token. My grandparents died many years ago: Mabel & John, Boone & Irene. It's so interesting how names go in and out of favor, isn't it?
mine were Anna & Chet and Kitty & Chuck. I made a pie for New Year's too. Apple. I didn't know it was a tradition, it just seemed like the right thing to do.
I'm so sorry to hear about your grandparents. My 99-year-old grandfather died on the 24th. Even though they're old and you know it's inevitable, it's still an emotional time - and a sweet time of reminiscing.
My grandparents were Jim & Roma and Earl and Naomi (only, for some unknown reason it has always been pronounced Naoma.) My sisters and I have always thought it would be fun to name a daughter Roma Naoma, but no one has actually taken the plunge.
Lula Mae and Walter Albert Herman, Evelyn and Weldon George, A.V. and LaRae, Ruey and Vernon, and Merle and Lawrence. Aaawww. Love those names. they are related to me!
My mom's mom had to husbands: james and sidney and she was florence. I think I like her name a lot more now that I typed it. I've never done that before. Maybe it will make a good middle name for a baby...
You have pretty hands.
I am sorry for you loss. I am a quiet lurker who enjoys your blog.
minnie and david...and...max and esther.
Ruth & Melvin, Muriel & Wash, (Der)Mont & Blanche, David & Daisy
Such a beautiful picture and a wonderful tribute you have to two people that you love. I'm sorry for your loss.
I'm sorry, too, for your sadness.
That pictures is so beautiful, especially in the context of craving tradition and thinking about your heritage. Wow. I love it.
