Carina Schott's Mini Compound
In the June/July issue of Domino there was a tour of Carina Schott's home. I have read the article at least 15 times and I study the photos a little more deeply each time. I am in love! The home, in rural Matunuck, Rhode Island, is part of "50's mini-compound that also includes a guest cottage, a laundry shack and a neglected pool." The group of buildings is connected by a deck.
The home is beautiful, really beautiful, but I think what keeps me coming back is the unusual nature of the mini-compound buildings themselves — which according to the article, were almost uninhabitable when they first bought the home.
My daydreams are filled with atypical dwellings — converted warehouses, commercial spaces gone residential, experimental homes. Is it just me, or do you sort of have to happen upon an interesting space? How easy is it to seek out an atypical space when on a real estate hunt?

oh, i remember this story - i LOVE this house. that wonderful spot to play in the middle! what a sweet way to live.
I LOVED this story too. My wish list for dwellings ranges from abandoned farm houses in the middle of nowhere to converted warehouse apartments, to big city lofts.
Schools, kids, jobs, and budget always bring be back to reality. But oh to dream!
I think you may mean "uninhabitable".
Here in Brisbane, Australia, there's a family that lives in a converted concrete water tower -- it's a round building, and they've built several mezzanine level that allow views to the floors below. Imagine that!
Such a lovely house, so attainable.
Thank you Lauren! I need a proofreader. :)
I love the challenge of dealing with the nooks and cranny's of interesting spaces. Now I know why we both love this Provo house so much.
i am still so smitten with that sand box
i can't believe this was in that domino issue and i don't even remember it--i'm completely taken by that home!
I'm kind of glad to find out that other people dream of living in somewhat unusual structures. I think of living in a converted shop or small warehouse, "underground" houses, lofts (like Heather wants) with exposed HVAC, and attics. I always wanted an attic room!
And that house is very lovely. However, we're on our very first house and still fixing it up...so the thought of what they had to do to make it so wonderful...gives me pain!
everyone in my office loved this article so much we sent her family Tretorn shoes. She's as nice and gracious as she is creative.
I ADORE this house - and most of the stuff in Dwell, actually. At my worst, I feel entitled to this kind of dwelling. (Isn't that awful?) :)
I loved this house too. And the photographs, so sweet.
