Interview: Michael Fink of Saks Fifth Avenue
You know how good it feels when you manage to wear the exact right ensemble at the exact right time? It doesn't happen very often (at least to me), but I loooove that feeling. So I have to say, there is nothing in my closet. Not one item of clothing. That would have been perfect for the particular situation I'm about to describe to you.
From time to time I'm offered a chance to interview someone as part of a media campaign. And I've typically said "no thank you" for one reason or another. (The reasons mostly being my randomly occurring social awkwardness.) But the other day I received an invitation to interview Michael Fink, the head of Women's Fashion for Saks Fifth Avenue. And I was like, "You bet!" I couldn't say yes fast enough. Because I think Michael Fink is amazing at what he does. And I totally wanted to meet him.
So I showed up at Saks, pretending I was dressed well and totally-up-to-speed-fashion-wise, and sat down for a while with Michael Fink. This is what I learned. Every spring and every fall Saks and Mastercard partner up — they pick the hottest trends and put them on a list. The Saks Want It! List — which comes out this Thursday. For Fall 2008, here's what Michael says is super hot:
1) Purple. Leaning toward berry, not toward lavender.
2) The Romantic Blouse. Something with ruffles or lace.
3) The Top Handle Bag. Bonus: it comes with a shoulder strap. Which makes things much easier for Moms-on-the-go who need two hands at all times.
4) Tailored Dresses. Put away the a-lines, and opt for something a little more refined.
5) Boots. Any style. Any height. Any heel. Any boot.
6) The Statement Necklace. Something chunky, big or bold.
And for Men. Plaid. Plaid. Plaid. Plaid ties, plaid pants, plaid shirts. (Preferably not all at once.) Add something plaid to your husband's wardrobe and you'll be good to go.
That is the Fall '08 Want It! List in miniature. Now don't you feel all fashion forward? Nice. You can find the expanded version at Saks this week.
And now I'll describe to you my complete and total moment of embarrassment. The exact kind of moment that keeps me from participating in more interviews.
The interview was going very well. Michael was gracious (and impeccably dressed — with a plaid tie) and lovely to speak with. And we were sort of wrapping things up when I suddenly made the conversation really, really awkward. Because I am an idiot.
I mentioned how I had first seen Michael on The Sartorialist. And Michael responded how he also enjoyed reading Scott Schuman (the name of The Sartorialist) and asked if I'd ever met him. And then Michael said, "And he has such great eyes." And I paused (just the tiniest pause), not quite knowing how to respond, before I said, "Oh. I've never seen The Sartorialist before. So... He's handsome?"
And as the expression on Michael Fink's face changed every so slightly, I suddenly realized he had said, "He has such a great eye." (Not, he has such great eyes.) As in, The Sartorialist has such a great ability to spot beautiful fashion. Oh.
At this point I mentally willed myself to become invisible while I died of embarrassment and simultaneously left Michael Fink to either confirm or deny the handsome-ness of The Sartorialist. Oh. (Shudder!) I'm still cringing at the memory. (There's a photo of Scott Schuman here, fyi. And yes. He's very handsome.)
Michael was (of course) completely delightful through it all and even though I was badly dressed and asked awkward questions, he didn't even give me a dirty look or raised eyebrow once. Not for a second. Even so, with my shame and awkwardness hanging heavily over me, I couldn't leave the interview fast enough.
If anyone else is interested in having me ask them socially awkward questions, just have your people call my people.

OK, it wasn't that bad (at all!), but my face is turning totally red just thinking about being in the same situation. There but for you go I...so to speak. :)
P.S. I'm feeling very fashionable right now because I'm wearing a plum-colored shirt.
Great story; thanks for giving us a come-along-with-me view of your interview!
I once fell down the stairs and landed in front of Miss America. If that makes you feel better :)
You are HILARIOUS! And a very good writer. I was right there with you in that awkward moment.
Oh Gab! That is such a great story! You're going to be telling that for years.
Oh, you are so cute! I totally feel your pain! I can't even count all the embarrassing encounters I've had--especially with "important" people. I think it's great you put yourself out there and did the interview even though it was uncomfortable. Also good to know that my ruffled shirt is right on track! Thanks, as always, for the great info and inspiration!
why is it that I feel like I wrote that? completely relating to both the fashion and interview awkwardness I am simultaneously shocked that late last winter I bought a purple (leaning towards berry) tailored dress! not because I follow trend, simply because a) i liked it and b) it made me look thinner.
go figure!
I hear ya and I'm feeling you!
I`m not suprised but he is totally dead on with all the fall trend allerts I`ve been reading from InStyle, etc. So funny, I bet you did and looked wonderful...everyone`s socially awkward in their own way, so don`t feel bad :)
How funny! He won't soon forget you...that's a great thing!!
Karen
Oh my gosh - you are just adorable! I'm sure he thought so too. I check your blog every day for the inspirational eye candy - but I think this is my favorite post yet!
First of all, you were always fabulously pulled together every time I saw you or spotted you at Blogher, so I don't believe the first part of this post. ;)
Second, SO happy to hear there are trends I can actually pull off this year!
Third, I'm relentlessly socially awkward and always saying the LAMEST stuff, that I totally am relating right now.
So cool that you even did this tho, love it!

Oh god, that's so something I would do. Take comfort in the fact that he's probably completely forgotten about it already, especially after having been completely dazzled by you!
Gabrielle, you are hilarious...and too hard on yourself. I'm sure you looked fabulous--look at that romantic blouse you are wearing--perfectly along the lines of "Fall 2008 Fashion". While I've never met anyone quite like Michael Fink...I've definitely said and done the wrong thing more times than I'd like to recall.
If some of your goals from the interview were to pass on great information, entertain us, and impress us with your writing, then congratulations on accomplishing them. Great job.
Not that bad, but such a funny story! Thanks for sharing your pleasant, and totally innocent mistake.
You are to funny, don't worry I am willing to bet I am tons more socially akward than you ever could be! :)
You are hilarious! I'm sure it wasn't as bad as you say. I am famous for my conversational snaffus in those when-it-counts moments. Thank you for sharing.
That's awkward small potatoes, I'm a bigger idiot in my sleep, truly! I am also feeling very very lame because just THIS MORNING I ordered an a-line skirt online, thinking it was just the thing my wardrobe needs. Not all of us can do pencil skirts and tailored dresses because they require a back slit and, well, some of us don't want to show stuff off. So I will be a decade behind this fall. But at least it's not lavender, and maybe I can salvage my situation with a statement necklace or purple bag...
Oh, thank you for sharing your socially awkward moment! I completely feel your pain. And it's so fun to know the fall trends in a nutshell!
uh, isn't it possible that you heard the subtext behind what he said, or even that he may have meant to say "great eye" and actually said "great eyes"? Perhaps when you left his office HE was dieing of embarrassment that his secret crush was exposed!!! (okay, that's my version of the Brady Bunch "picture them in their underwear" speech to make you feel better)
p.s. when are sweatpants and an un-mirrored ponytail going to be on the "Want It" list? I'm ready.
I am busting a gut.
You are a scream. You made everyone that read that post feel completely human today. Good for you for sharing that moment.
By the way, you're really tall, eh?
Thanks everyone for making me feel like I'll recover. :)
And fyi, I'm 5' 6" — but wearing very tall heels in that photo.
i love you for this! i'm sure he thought you were delighful and charming and refreshing!
but that moment makes it all so much more memorable! so funny. and I bet it wasn't as bad as you felt it was.
LOL. This story made me think of a hilarious anecdote in Anthony Bourdain's "Kitchen Confidential." He is interviewing for a chef position at a steakhouse. The owner asks him the following question: "What do you know about me?" Bourdain decides to be honest and answers "Absolutely nothing!" The owner laughs in disbelief and quickly concludes the interview. Only when Bourdain is outside does he realize that the question was actually "What do you know about MEAT?"
VERY funny...
loved this... and i truly doubt it was as bad as you thought. what a great opportunity, thanks for bringing us along!
Another reason to stay home in the confines of your very own comfort zone, but then again, I can just see the look in your eyes at the "opportunity" for wanting that sort of interview. I have so been there in your awkward shoes. Glad you stepped out and shared your interview, through your eyes.
hahaha thats hilarious - but I have made much worse mistakes than this - so you can rest assured it wasn't that bad. we were talking at a trade show to a buyer who asked about our presecence in Heal's - which you may know - it's a great design focussed interior store, in London. We said they were very bad at promoting us and their buying departments didn't communicate with each other - to which the buyer we were talking to agreed - and then explained she was the fabrics buyer for Heal's. We nearly died!!!

As someone who has spent the majority of my life reliving awkward moments with intensely self-critical and cyclical thoughts, I'd like to say that I'm impressed that you were able to interview him! And I'd like to point you towards Louise Hay (author of I Can Do It), who would tell you to feel wonderful about yourself, and leave it at that. I hope that you're able to relish the meeting and the interview--you have much to feel good about!
hehehe, this is probably exactly something I would do! It was fine, I am sure he has suffered through worse!
I am delurking here to say how much I love your blog! I have had you bookmarked since July of 06. You are an inspiration to me, and I haven't commented before. Well, maybe one other time.
Thank you for pulling all the auctions together for NieNie!
all I have to say, Gabby, is that you are just simply, awesome!
Don't we all have socially awkward moments? Yours just happened to be while interviewing a well dressed, in-the-know, fashion guru. It happens to the best of us.
that is so hilarious!! i'm sure he found it to be totally adorable.
Micheal came to my college to view the fashion illustrations of the seniors at my school, I accidentally called him Micheal Phelps.... I THINK mine was worse than yours...
