Birthday Reports

One last quick report on Ralph and Olive's Birthdays. This year was a non-friend-party year for both of them. So instead we celebrated with a family party — two days in a row. And all of our usual traditions, of course.

We used the fabric banner as a celebratory focus point and expanded the party from there. For Olive, we added yellow — which she felt was adequately feminine. Instead of a cake, she wanted something "fancy" for dessert. So we made schaum torte with fresh peaches. Mmmmmm.

Then the next day, for Ralph, we switched out the tablecloth and put the yellow away. He wanted brownie sundaes instead of birthday cake. Which reminds me. Fun and successful experiment: we cooked the brownies in a bundt pan and served them in the cute ring shape as if they were a cake. They came out of the pan pretty darn well, and then we covered any slightly-messy parts with a pretty coating of powdered sugar. Super easy way to make brownies feel special.

And the highlight on both birthdays was the much-anticipated breakfast in bed:

too cute gabby. TOO cute!

We are talking about your idea in our little family about which years to make a big deal and which years to not. Tomorrow Evan is 1 and it's a big one hooray! I love that I have learned from you to think of color schemes in decorating instead of busy themes (not that those aren't fun sometimes too- but it's not always necessary).

My lifesaver when using a bundt pan is the Pam spray with flour. It get's out your stuff cleanly despite all those little pan-mold spaces.

Lovely! I have a 1-year-old (2 in Dec) and have started thinking about what traditions we want to maintain for our family. I love hearing about others - breakfast in bed sounds divine!

Love your navy chairs, I dream of the day I can furnish my house with those chairs! Where did you have luck finding them?

We have been doing breakfast in bed for birthdays since my now 12 yr old was 5. both of my boys look so forward to it. They have to be 5 to take advantage of this birthday tradition. The "Birthday Faity" comes and decorates their rooms with balloons stuck to the bedposts, bedroom door and closet doors. Than the "fairy " puts paper mache streamers all across their bedroom ceilings like a huge X. It also hangs from the door like it is that beady hanging stuff from the top of the doorjam. It sure is amazing how such little things sometimes are the family favorites?

That is great idea for brownies. I always feel guilty when we have people over and I just do a quick brownie mix, this way would look so much better.
