Football Season — by Guest Dad John Spencer
It's not a carpentry-related post, but it seems very Guest Dad appropriate.
Like it or not, it's almost autumn and that means football season. Millions of dads are preparing to hunker down on the couch and give an enthusiastic, "Yes!" to the question, "Are you ready for some football?" The National Football League and NCAA College Football games are the most popular spectator events in the country.
I have to admit that it's pretty easy for a guy to get carried away with this, and this usually doesn't thrill his better half. It's not too cool to blow off your family to get some quality time watching your favorite team, so I have a suggestion. Dads, if the kids are old enough to color, print the drawings from the rulebook at NFL.com. They have pictures of football referees and all of the hand signals for penalties. During the game, just lay them out on the coffee table with a handful of crayons and start coloring with the kids. You will be able to teach them about the rules, give your wife a little break, and watch football.
Who said guys can't multi-task?

This is such a cute idea! What a great way for kids to learn and bond with their parents during the game!
Beautiful, I love it, and I love that a man came up with it, Kudos. My kids learned these hand signals from the time they were babies, I think I'll have to print some of these off!
I have already forwarded it to my husband, thanks for finding a creative way to keep my daughter's attention on football a little longer.
Really is a good idea...my husband is totally one of those guys that has the NFL ticket with 8 games on at once...*sigh*...
Cute idea!! I know a few moms who might find that coloring would liven up a TV football game for them as well. : )
that link is pretty great - my boy plays football and i am going to see what i can do with these images
I love this site. I love the links and gorgeous stuff on it. I know I should say something like "awesome link" and it is cool, but I'm an almost-mom and I was as excited two Saturdays ago for the first Saturday of college football as my husband. I was as excited last Sunday for the beginning of the NFL. I devoted as much time, if not more, than my husband to researching draft picks my two fantasy football teams. And every year I am the one who organizes getting season tickets for my beloved University of Utah Utes. There are millions of women out there who love the fall because it means football.
I realize football is not every woman's sport of choice, but neither is it every man's. I am having a baby boy in a few weeks and I really hope he loves football as much as his father and I do, but you can be assured that if I ever have a girl, she's getting as many lessons in the finer points of the game as her brother.
Thanks for the great ideas! My husband is already setting his plans around game time. I do have to admit that I had three brothers and loved football from a tiny girl, but I could never compete with the amount of couch time put in by the "boys". If I sat there as much as they do, I would be afraid to eat one bite of anything all season!
