My Tribute To The Blogging Community's Response to Nie Nie

Can I just say, again and again, how delighted/impressed/touched/amazed I am by the response from you, the internet community? At last report, I heard that since Nie Nie Day, over $117,000 has been donated to the Nie Recovery Fund. The vast majority of that from auctions, in smallish increments like $50 to $100, and the remaining from good people that didn't win an auction, but wanted to contribute anyway.

This has truly been a grass roots effort. There was no ad campaign, no email blast, no newsletter to get people to start auctions and fundraising. Just one simple post. And then you took that idea and ran with it. You spread the word on your own blogs, in your emails, and through your conversations with friends. You raised a lot of money in a very short period of time. You shared your enthusiasm and your generosity. $50 earrings going for $110. Gift certificates worth $150 going for $250. A blog post written by Stephanie's brother going for over $800. And 99% of you have never met Stephanie or Christian in real life.

In fact, nearly 1000 emails have come my way with questions and comments about Stephanie, her blog, Nie Nie Day and the auctions. And a large number of those emails mention they only heard of The Nie Nie Dialogues after word of the tragic accident had begun to spread. But they had since visited Stephanie's Blog and instantly fallen in love — as does seemingly everybody (how can they not?) — with Nie's beautiful posts and positive outlook.

In many emails, people were worried their auctions might not get enough attention — maybe their blog readership consisted solely of their mother and best friend. But we solved that by listing everything in a central location. So even the smallest of blogs, the smallest of auctions, could receive clicks and bids. Sometimes those bids came from people who knew nothing of The Nie Nie Dialogues. But that didn't matter. They visited their friend's blog, they saw the auction, and wanted to support that friend, so they put in a bid — knowing that it was going to a good cause.

And without any traditional PR methods, your goodness has completely caught the attention of traditional Media. First the NYTimes story. Then the Today Show segment. And at least a dozen newscasts and newspapers in Arizona and Utah (the two states where Nie Nie's story is playing out) have picked up the story as well. I won't be a bit surprised if Oprah or Martha wants to feature it — I know it's been pitched to both.

The media attention will no doubt bring in additional funds to help Christian and Stephanie (hooray!). I hope it will also continue to bring attention to this generous blogging community. And the real and positive results that come from the virtual friendships we've formed here and throughout our blogging world. I've never been more proud to call myself a blogger.

The auctions at Design Mom have all but winded down. But if you'd still like to get involved, it's not too late. The lovely ladies over at Nie Recovery are listing ongoing fund-raising activities. You can reach them at nierecovery@gmail.com. As always, you can find updates on Christian and Stephanie at CJane's Enjoy It.

Not only has the story of Nie Nie Day received a great deal of coverage in the US - coverage has gone global. I'm currently living in India and the NY Times article was picked up in the Times of India, Delhi edition this past Sunday.

And it all started with a great idea and a blog post.

Grace, thanks for finding a way to involve us all in this sad, yet beautiful story. I love watching people care for other people, especially for one, such as Stephanie, who showed so much compassion on her blog.

With the successful response of Nie Nie day, it makes me wonder what else we could do—how many other lives we could improve!

This amazing effot has been due mostly to your great idea of the nie nie day blog auctions. I have been overwhelmed by all of it. You are wonderful and have really started something remarkable.
Thanks for your example...

Gabrielle,

It seems to me that your heart, talents, connections, blog, etc. were in the right place at the right time. Thanks for following the inspiration to organize all of this--it is so amazing how generous everyone has been. I just wish there were hundreds of comments on this post (just like the number of comments on all your giveaways) to thank you for all you've done for the Nielsens and the blogging community (in terms of being so positive about the work/ideas of other bloggers). I think you're great! Thanks for all you do!

I was smitten when I discoverd Nie Nie this past spring. And equally devestated hearing of her accident.

Thank you for all you've done to facilitate this generosity hugeness from bloggers!

By the way, I enjoy your blog and have never told you so until now.

I found your blog and first heard of NieNie through an auction at Leslie's blog A Room Somewhere. I even donated my graphic design services from Poppy Seed Design and was amazed to find that the package went for more than it retailed for! This has been such an amazing effort - I'm a huge believer in the power of the blogging community. We live in a time where each voice can truly be heard separately, or in this case - together, and loudly.

I get teary every time I read about what Stephanie and Christian and their kids are going through. And I also get teary in a good way when I read about the blogging community that united so suddenly and strongly to help a family in need.
I am honored to have been a part of the auctions, and am amazed at the response of the companies who donated items, and the generosity of old and new friends who have gotten involved. I agree with the sentiment that together we can do great things. Thank you so much for your "one simple post"!

Thanks again!

From a Grandmother:
In another era, women would have shared news while hanging out the laundry, chatting over the back fence with a neighbor. And those same women would have put their sympathies into a bake sale, etc., for a good cause.
It's wonderful to witness that timeless compassion at work in your current world of blogging "neighbors." Bless you all!

This is an amazing story and I am so proud of everyone. Isn't it refreshing to see people be so thoughtful and generous in a typically hostile and selfish world? And a huge thank you to you for spearheading this and for all your work on the lists and everything. I thought the lists were fabulous and made it easy to sort through everything. You are so wonderful! (I'm gushing now, but it's true!) (P.S. I am a friend of Laura Barlow's who knew you when she lived in NY and adores you.)

Hello,
This is very off the subject of your blog entry...but do you take interior design questions? If so, in a dining room could you have the same wood/color furniture as you do hard wood flooring? We found a GREAT Moosehead Maine Maple set but it is the same color as our hardwood flooring. Is that a big NoNO? Thanks in advance if you can provide any info.

This is a beautiful post! Again, a great tribute to strong, wonderful women who reached out and helped someone that they could relate to on some level. Motherhood and sisterhood will do it everytime!
In PEOPLE magazine this month, this story had a quick write up under 'recovery' and spoke about the blogging community coming together for this wonderful family. The Times, TODAY show and now even PEOPLE. On so many levels, this has been a wonderful story of love and inspiration. I think that it hits home because it is so tragic and yet bonding at the same time. Thank YOU for all that you have done to pull this auction together. Our thoughts and prayers continue for this family as well as for her siblings that care for her littles.

You have achieved amazing results! I just wish that I lived much closer cause there were many things I would love to have bid on but postage to Australia is far too expensive! :( (Do love the donate through paypal system though!)

One thing that has impressed me with all of this is the proof that through the internet, it doesn't matter where you live or what you do....the world suddenly becomes a whole lot smaller and people who would never otherwise know each other have to opportunity to truly do something magnificent to help someone else.

Congratulations on all of your efforts. It is so impressive.

I pray that Stephanie (and Christian, of course) will be back soon to read about what incredible people there are who truly do care for them!

Gabrielle -
I have loved your blog from the moment I laid eyes n it and it was you who introduced me to Nie Nie.

I was immediately drawn in...I have been inspired by the grace, storytelling and artful eye of Nie Nie but would flit in and out of her blog on an irregular basis so I could feast myself with her images and words each time I returned...

I was shocked to hear about their accident and wandered about with a hollow feeling for a few days until I heard of the auctions. I am so delighted that so many joined the call!

Wishing Nie, Christian and their family the very best... we continue to pray for them.

OH - I almost forgot! GAYLE KING, yes OPRAH's best friend talked about Nie Nie on her radio show on the XM Channel 156 (Oprah's satellite station.) She said she saw the story on the Today show and was very moved and said that she was praying for the family during their time of recovery!
