My Father's Dragon
, by Ruth Stiles Gannett I know I did a dragon book last time, but it reminded me of this one and this one is awesome. Such a great story: an alley cat convinces a little boy to stow away on a ship and rescue a young dragon. Pretty much a can't miss with any child. I love this book as an introduction to reading chapter books aloud at bedtime. The plot is not too hard to follow, the language is fairly simple and there are lots of really great illustrations to aid the imagination.
There are 3 books in the series. The volume we have has all 3. All three are good, but the first is best.
My sister-in-law Traci sent this book, along with a recording she made of the book being read aloud. We have listened to it on roadtrips a hundred times. And read the book as a bedtime story a hundred more. A really thoughtful gift.

This is my husband's favorite book!
I love that one, and I never see anyone talking about it! It's one of the few "chapter books" I have read to my 5 year old.
This was one of my son's favorite books. Thanks for letting other parents know about it.

I didnt know this book was a series! My father had this book as a child (the original print!) and he read it to me when I was little girl. I remember wearing one of his big t-shirts as a nightshirt, tucking my knees up inside it, and snuggling next to him on our big, smooshy, yellow & lime green striped couch.
I just read it to my children a few weeks ago for the first time (frayed binding, yellowed pages and all!). :) I love this book. I used to trace the map with my finger for hours.
My son and I are on the third book right now! It has been a good set of chapter books for a 4 1/2 year old.
