Hästens Beds

So I noticed these striking blue check mattresses by Hästens on my last trip to ABC Home, and then I started seeing ads for them everywhere. Ev. ry. where. And now I'm all curious. Does anyone know the story? Are they really as comfortable as the rumors say? And speaking of rumors, how expensive are they — because I've heard they're in the same price range as a luxury sports car. What? That's crazy.

They are Swedish and made by hand with horse hair. They do have cheaper ones that start around $5-10K (if you consider that cheap!)

Domino did a review of these a while back. I've always loved these mattresses. mostly because I think the gingham fabric is super cute:)Probably not cute enough to spend that much money on them though.

Those mattresses are insanely expensive. At that price, they better come with a hunky Swede named Sven who rubs my back on demand.

My friends bought one. A cheaper one but still very expensive. It's wonderful. Really. But he works odd hours throughout the week, so he needed something that would provide the best sleep possible. They swear by it.

60k? That's nearly half what my HOUSE is worth. Granted, housing is cheap here, but come on...I really can't stomach needless waste of money which could be put into something much less selfish. I mean, let's say you spend $1500 on a nice mattress, that's fine, now take the 58.5k left over and go turn someone's life around, donate it to a struggling animal rescue, or any other of the millions of positive things you could do with that chunk of change...people make me ill sometimes.

I just saw an ad for them in Metropolitan Home. I had no idea how expensive they were! Holy cow.

Well, they sure are cute but there is no way I'd ever spend even a fraction of that on a mattress. I have a double pillow top that works just fine and was like pocket change compared to that!

Pffffffffffffffbbbblllllt.

I guess people WILL pay good money for anything these days. You could hire a seamstress to ginghamify your plain nice mattresses for that, just so you know that under your sheets there is still pretty stuff going on (?). And then for that money the seamstress could be your assistant for 2 years. And you could still buy her a small boat, if she's into that kind of thing.

I can't imagine paying that much for a mattress, but I guess if you want to, it's your choice. I won't judge! I'm sure people don't agree with how much I spend on purses!

I don't love the gingham either. I rather buy a $2000 mattress and some really nice sheets! Oh and a nanny to get up with our daughter, so I could actually use it all!

A swedish newspaper did an independent test a few years ago between different beds, and Ikeas bed got almost the same rating as Hästens...

The Swedish "test" by the newspaper was done by a newspaper which is partially owned by IKEA Sangar, so I would discount this test.

I have the Hastens Superia, which is only $8,000 - and this has been the best night's sleep ever. Seriously. They are made of horsehair, wool, cotton, and flax for the record. If you don't believe me, go to your local Hastens dealer and have a test rest.

Let me say this - because this is why I bought one - you spend 1/3 of your life in bed. Yet, you spend more money on a car which you spend less time in. Now ask yourself - what's worth more to you? A quick trip to the market or a great nights' sleep? There you go.

GIL, I am glad that you've found a great bed! Good sleep is a gift.
Dagens Nyheter, the swedish newspaper I reffered to earlier, is not owned by IKEA or Hästens. It's owned by the Bonnier family.

I misspoke - the Bonnier Family has stock in various AG and SG European companies, I had been told they owned stock in both. Looking at the e-mail I received on the matter, it is clear that I skimmed it and interpreted ownership and stock and got the whole thing wrong.

Either way, seriously - spend the money, get the Hastens. Your body will thank you for it!

Hastens beds may be pricey, but their history and craftsmanship speaks for itself. Bed pricing starts at $4,375. Their beds are all handmade (approx 160 hrs of work per bed)... and the company allows you to make personalized specifications, usually for no additional cost. For those who are truly interested or just curious take some time to go through their website:

The price does seem insane – but then, so does paying that much for a car, which seems to be a bit more acceptable (to some)! And I certainly spend less time per day sleeping than in a car. It's all about priorities, I guess.
