Kenana Knitted Creatures
Another amazing find from the Gift Show. I love these knitted creatures by the Kenana group. The subtle colors. The gotta-touch-it texture. I think the owls are my favorite. Each toy is made with home spun wool, dyed with natural plant dye, and knitted by a huge group of women in Kenya. Each piece is signed by the woman who knitted it.
From their website: The Kenana Knitters group enables its workers to directly benefit from their efforts and create a self-sufficient community. With your purchases, we have been able to increase employment drastically in both Kenya and the United States, provide full physicals and ongoing medical treatment for each knitter and their families. We have even begun construction on a school located within the farm boundaries.
This lovely lady is named Gloria. She's the heart behind the whole project — working like crazy and even refusing a salary. See the light glow behind her head? It's because she's a saint. NBC did a segment about the whole project that can be viewed here.
Kenana sells wholesale or you can buy directly from them on their site.
