Book of the Week: the Jolly Postman
I remember when this book first arrived at my childhood home. I think I was already a teenager, maybe just a tween, but I loved the cleverness of it and liked taking the time to study the details.
You get to see the Postman deliver mail to many familiar childhood friends, and that's lovely in itself. But even more fun: there are actual little letters to pull out of actual little envelopes so you can read the mail. I remember one letter from Jack, who was vacationing on a sunny island and writing the Giant, thanking him for the gold that made this little holiday possible. It's such a treat to read, full of little surprises.
In a word the book is charming. Charming concept. Charming text. And charming illustrations.
You can find it here.

Our favorite book is "each peach, pear, plum" by the same authors. Its a fabulous rhyming book where you have to find the different characters.
Little ones love it!
Great book! One of our family favorites is "Each Peach, Pear Plumb"(same authors). It never seems to get old--we've read it so many times that I think my 3-year old can repeat the text from memory. My kids especially love finding the various storybook characters hidden in each illustration. I can't wait to check out this new book! It's sure to be as well loved and witty as the Ahlberg book we already know.
Not even 10:00 yet, and already to mentions of Each Peach, Pear, Plum. I've got to check this book out. . .
Oh, I loved this book growing up! It is a classic in my mind!
I love this book! When I was a kid I had a teacher who introduced it to our class and we made up our own versions for a project. So fun. I think I need to check out Each Peach, Pear, Plum too now!
I LOVED this book when I was a kid... opening up the letters... so fun! I'm glad you reminded me of it... my little one would love it herself. off to the bookstore!
We have had this book for years(14?)and it has been worn out with love. Just bought a new copy a couple of months ago. Love the Ahlbergs. Another one of our favorites by them is THE BABY'S CATALOGUE. Sadly this is out of print, so try the library, which is where we discovered it.
This is our family favorite. We especially liek the christmas edition. No one can beat the Jolly Postman!
