Kids Clothes — by Guest Mom Rebecca Bingham

I was going to mix it up a bit, but I am going to stick with the clothing theme for one more day. Tomorrow I am going to move on to some other fun things, but today I am going to share my secret weapons in children’s clothes. No matter how you choose to dress your children, we all want a few of the same things; comfort, price and durability. It doesn’t matter if you have a hipster baby or a girly girl.

My quest started when my daughter Lulu was about three years old. She was very tall for her age and had already outgrown the baby sections at the usual mall stores. I just wanted her to have clothes that fit, but kept her looking like a little girl, not a Bratz doll. I started to spend a lot of time in Naartjie (pronounced Nar-CHEE). The clothes are cute and unique and I love the mix and match patterns. Lulu is a girly girl and pretty much only wears dresses. It was a challenge to find clothes that were appropriate for school and play but helped keep her modest as well. The big appeal for me was that she can wear pants under most of the dresses and skirts. It is kind of a mix and match / layering style, this held large appeal for her because she could choose her own clothes and they almost always worked. Naartjie is a South African company that is starting to break ground in the US. In the four years that I have been shopping here, it has been my experience that the winter collections are fine, but nothing spectacular. The spring and summer stuff make me spend my entire clothing budget in one trip. Every spring they have a version of this dress and it is my all time favorite. It is airy and light and it looks great with or without pants. The first time Lulu saw it she declared it “the perfect dress to dance in”. I think it is the perfect twirling dress. One year they didn’t have it and so many people complained they made it part of their basics. I pass on my kids clothes and the first season of Naartjie that I ever bought is currently on its 4th child and STILL looks great.

Lulu models her favorite dress from last spring. She said she wanted to look “strong”. We have these pants in every color and they go under everything. When she doesn’t feel like wearing pants, she wears her Monkey Bar Buddies.

I lucked into a clearance sale of these basics a few weeks ago. Nori now has a whole drawer full of pink, orange, blue and cream. This one is my favorite outfits because I think it looks so pretty against her dark skin and hair.

Pros: the clothes are super soft and can wash and wear. There is lots of attention to detail and sweet touches on the collars and cuffs. The mix and match colors stay the same from season to season, so you can match clothes from one year to the next — this makes them ideal for hand-me-downs. Their “basics” are always 2 for 20$, you can get a lot of clothes for your money. They have GREAT sales, often clothes are marked down to 4.99$ or 6.99$.

Cons: the boy stuff is well made and looks good, but not too different than what you will find other places. The biggest con is that these clothes look MUCH better on than in the pictures. Also, in the stores and on the website the models usually have about 3 more layers than I would put on my kids. So, mentally take away a few layers and picture it on a body. I PROMISE you won’t be disappointed (check out their gallery for proof). Another con is the lack of stores. They are growing, but they are mostly in the West (but you East Coasters have H&M Kids so it evens out). The order process from the website is a little long, but worth it.

My sister Cyndi’s boys always looked so comfy and put together as babies. You won’t find a dump truck or dinosaur in her closets. It is fauxhawks and hipster gear all the way. Her secret weapon for babies is Zutano. These are clothes that are soft enough to sleep in, but look great for the day time too. You pick a color palate that you like and the website will show you all the patterns and colors that match it. Then, choose your body style and you are set. I loved that they have especially cute things for boys. It seems that with boys, you can have the option of cutesy stuff or t-shirts and cargos. This is a great middle ground.

My nephew Thomas was wearing this Zutano outfit today. I made him stop eating grass long enough for me to take a picture. How cute is this?

What are you secret weapons? I want to hear especially from the mamma’s of well dressed boys. I am not sure what to do for bigger kids since Zutano really is geared for babies and young toddlers. My two year old son Jacob lives in t shirts and cords. I am this close to buying a shirt with Elmo on it just to shake things up a bit.

P.S. Check out Mini Boden if you didn’t yesterday. I have a few of the things from the kids section and have been really happy. Their summer stuff is cute, but it is the winter/fall stuff that is extra special. Several commenters said they have kids stuff and are also pleased. Order the catalogue because there is much more stuff in there than on the website. This applies to the adult stuff and the kids stuff. The swimsuits for everyone are awesome!!!

I love Naartjie. I discovered it after baby #2. We don't have a local store here, so I am glad you pointed out that I can shop on-line. Maybe that is a bad thing . . .

Love your models!

My secret is great hand-me-downs. Usually I am on the receiving end. And it doesn't hurt that those who pass things to me love to shop, so I get a lot of stuff that hasn't even been worn yet. With three boys I can verify--it's harder to find cute clothes for boys! And it gets even more interesting when they get older and they want to find their own respective styles. My 11-year-old tomboy daughter is usally the first to lay claim on the older boys' hand-me-downs. What's a mom to do?

don 't forget the BESt part about naartjie--when your kids outgrow it, it sells AWESome on eBay! i had a set last year i bought new on clearance for under $15 and sold used on ebay for $65! i love to be able to justify spending money on clothes as an investment...

I forgot that they sell well on Ebay... I have seen the pages and pages of it.... that is a great point Western Rebel.

Compulsive..I get hand me downs too (in fact, Cubby's clothes are ALL hand me downs). Between my sisters and a few of my friends, we all kind of swap clothes around.

Bubbles... you have to look at the website and then send them an email with the size and color that you want..then they will check out all the stores and send you the stuff. Sometimes it comes from different soters. They clearly don't have a central warehouse or antyhing like that. Like I said, it takes longer than normal but it works. I find that if I shop online, I don't buy as much (for that pesky reason that the clothes look so much better in real life...).

I guess I have a bit of a bias -- but I also think I'm justified. My husband works for Osh Kosh in Park City, UT, and until he started working for them, I was pretty unfamiliar with the product. Mostly what came to mind was those not-so-cute striped overalls. Anyway, we only shop there for our two toddler boys (have to support the company that's SO good to us), but I love it. We both, like Rebecca, are HUGE consumers, so we buy lots of clothes, and previously shopped mostly at Gap and Old Navy (still cute). But Osh Kosh has good prices, really great sales, and the clothes hold up so well. Maybe it's not "funky," but that's never been our style. The downside is they're not online yet (I know -- what??), but check it out if you're near a store. You'll love it.

Thanks for these recommendations! I hadn't heard of Naartjie, but am now excited to check out their outlet in AZ next time I get up in the Phoenix area! I love mini boden, too. Another unexpected place I am really liking now is Lands end kids. I just got my daughter a bathing suit, board shorts, climber khakis and adorable a-line graphic print hooded tunic, all for $10 or less each on their clearance. Some of the stuff is predictable, but good value preppy basics (if that is your style), but they also are carrying more and more bold graphics that seem more modernish to me.

As a mom of two boys, I get clothes everywhere. But I have to search a little harder to find cute stuff. You've got your staples: Target, Gap, Old Navy. I too love Mini-Boden and Zutano... super cute. But here are some of my favorite brands that haven't been mentioned yet: Charlie Rocket, hip and trendy, perfect for the skater/ surfer look for your little guy (they make boardshorts for as little as 3 months!) Splendid is another great one - they have great basics, and the cotton is super soft. Okkies, Harajuku Lovers & Small Paul by Paul Frank all have fun and trendy things. But my favorite is probably American Apparel: http://www.americanapparel.net ... they have baby, toddler, kids and adults. Great basics ranging from tank tops and onesies to baseball style shirts. Great colors, soft & comfy fabric and at a price that doesn't hurt your wallet.

These are GREAT staples for boys. Petie...I always go to Osh Kosh when we go home to Park City but I can't find it here ANYWHERE!!! I think that is a great resource.... if they were online I would buy them in a second... (plus, we love you and Josh so we want to support them...)

Lands End Kids in another great boy store. I just got their catalouge ;-) I would totally shop for Cubby there...

Kelly-- THANK you for all the recommendations. Those are great....

Ummmm Naartjie has an OUTLET? WHAT? I am going to be in Phoenix at the end of the month... I need to find more money in my budget....

for boys, i love the children's place cargos. season after season, i end up going back there to get pants. i never usually like anything else there, but right now my son wears his children's place cargos almost every day. then in the summers i cut them off into long shorts, since i know by fall they'll be too short.

i get a lot of stuff from mini boden, but i always wait for the sales. there is usually one in the winter and one in the summer, and you can save a lot of cash. my only beef with mini boden is their sizing is awkward... right now my daughter is almost 7, but her 5-6 stuff is too small and i know the 7-8 stuff will drown her. i wish they offered everything in it's own size, so i knew what would fit her. and, their tights run small. order BIG if you want them to last.

as always, i'm loving target as well. i got my 4 year old the greatest coat and snow pants there this year for 50 bucks total! he looks like a little snowboarder in it; it's brown and so so cute. they always have fun t-shirts and good options, and it's so cheap.

we get a lot of t's for the kids from american apparel. i love their baseball t's and tank tops.

i can't wait to check out naartjie. their site is down right now (possible overload from all the design mom traffic?) but i'm sure i'll be on there by the end of the day!

The Naartjie website listed the outlet. It's in the Anthem outlets, which are actually a bit north of Phoenix, off of I-17. I haven't been there since before my daughter was born, but from the Anthem site it looks like they also have Osk Kosh, Gymboree, and Gap outlets, too! Oooh, now I really have to plan a trip!
