Cake Pulls
Apparently there is a (long-forgotten) tradition of pulling charms from Wedding cakes:
"Prior to her wedding, a bride would hide several sterling silver charms attached to satin ribbons within her wedding cake. Before she and the groom cut the first slice, her bridesmaids would each pull a charm as a special keepsake of the day. Each charm had a special meaning and foretold luck, romance, or good fortune. Cake pulls also are no longer hidden within the cake. Today, bakers place the sterling silver charms with only the ribbons showing under a plastic film that separates them from the bottom of the cake and protects the elaborately decorated confection."
I love this idea. We are in the midst of planning Maude's 8th birthday party, and this would be so great to do with her birthday cake. After the guests pull the ribbons, they could make charm bracelets for an activity.
My Charmed Life sells cake-pulling kits — and dozens and dozens of charms.

Charming Idea! Love it!!!
I want to do that for my wedding!!
i love that you posteed about this.
we did this for Valentines day this year and each of my girls got a heart charm in our Valentines day cake.
lived in New Orleans where they did these for weddings and just love the tradition
I love old traditions. They turn into wonderful new ones! I'm on my second go 'round (I have two pre-collegers and a three year old!) and traditions mean a lot to us. It's fun to keep building new ones. Thanks for always finding such great ideas!
What a fun idea!
You could do so much with this. Charms that correlate to prezzies at holidays, or even parting gifts at a dinner get-together, or photos, or whatever. I have a group of moms who get together and am thinking I'll make up some tags for time gifts (an hour of babysitting, 30 minutes of yardwork, a freezer meal, etc.) to give them. The pull & charm idea is so fun!
This started in New Orleans and is still very much a part of weddings here!
Not sure if it's common anywhere else but it is a given here in New Orleans. Typically only unmarried ladies pull though because the charms all have meanings, next to get married, old maid, fortune, luck, etc. Many websites where you can order them and find the meanings.
