Winner, Hands Down

My all-time favorite picture book is
Ox-Cart Man. Lovely at anytime of day, anytime of year, it's especially wonderful at bedtime because reading it seems to slow your heart rate. It marks the seasons with such a sense of purpose that you'll wonder why you haven't abandoned your urban/suburban life already and bought a farm.

I highly recommend it and I'm not the only one — it's a Caldecott winner.

I love this book. When I lived with you in Tuckahoe I would read it to your kids before I had to make up an adventure right before bed.

I just sent my husband to the book consignment store with hundreds of books. We have been cleaning out my dad's attic and found box after box after box and our kids already have over 400 books because we are both avid readers. I pulled out the ones I remembered the best. My hands rested on this book several times but the memory of it never came. I kept thinking I wanted to pick it up from the stacks and just kept putting it back thinking about how we needed the money more than another book on the shelf.

The day after he took all the boxes to the store, I read your post. I hoped that it was in one of the boxes we had yet to drop off, or that the store choose not to buy it from us. No such luck.

So we went off to the store and bought back this book. It is delightful. I read it to my son today after he woke up from his nap. He loved it.

Thank you for reminding me of the gem I already owned and speaking so beautifully of it that I bought it back :)
