Ask Design Mom — Adjustable Stools

It's Monday. And you may remember that on Mondays, I've pledged to post Ask-Design-Mom Questions. The first question is actually my own. I'm putting it out there to you. Because you are clearly brilliant and resourceful.
Here's the question. With a little explanation first.

I need 8 adjustable stools. I have a budget of $50/stool (or $400 total). I found the perfect stools at Crate & Barrel. I love the look. I love the function. But they are too far out of reach price wise — $200 each.

The stools look to me like specimen pieces. Like reproductions of older models. Like they might exist somewhere at a flea market.
If you have seen any stools like this for sale, please let me know. They could be old and battered, covered in chipping paint, mismatched. As long as they're still functional, and in my price range, I'd take them.

Any secret sources?

Here are some with a similar impact although not _quite_ as cool.

Can't beat the price!

One word...IKEA!!! Just noticed a stool there the other day that is black, adjustable, a bit industial looking (even though the material is wood). Its called the Dalfred barstool for $39.99. I've been on my own personal quest for an barstool with an industrial look, and these fit my bill at such a great price!

I've been looking for a cheaper alternative to a vintage industrial stool, too.... the best I could find was a Safco Diesel series, high base backless swivel stool (jeez, what a mouthful). I've had a hard time finding them for under $90 apiece though.

Check your local restaurant supply store - Often there are great prices on even used stools.

I found the same ones as Amanda. They may be a bit over $100, but you can't beat free shipping.

I just bought some stools from our local college surplus store (where they retire the college furniture) for 2 dollars each. They aren't quite what you're looking for, but they are of a similar genre. We had a neighbor with an auto body paint shop repaint them for us and they are AWESOME. I'm sure CU Boulder would have such a surplus store--you may want to check there.

Ok, this might sound weird, but you might want to check out state surplus auctions. I've come across a few different sites, and they usually have strict pick up/delivery policies, but you might find something awesome!

Of course, I can't find any of the links today...

They have Safco Diesel stools at CSN Supply. The high base ones are on sale for just over $80 and they have low base ones too for about $74:

They're not quite as industrial looking as the ones you've posted. But I have the low one as a piano stool, and it works really well.

ok I had the same issue. Lots of kids and not enough money for the outrageous price of stools- and I am a design nerd. Went to a thrift store and found old stools of all different types and reupholstered them all in the same fabric... amazing. With stools, fabric and reupholster it cost they cost $60 a piece give or take. And it was super fun. Gave myself a huge pat on the back for that one :)
