Ask Design Mom Week — 6-Year-Old Birthday Party Ideas
Question:
My niece is turning 6 next year and I'd like to plan a birthday party for her. Do you have any suggestions for party plans? I'd like to know! — love, Priscilia
Answer:
What a nice Aunt! Here are links to some of the favorite parties I've hosted or posted about over the last few years. Any of these could be adapted for a 6-year-old.
-Round & Round Circles Party (you could also make this a polka-dot party)
-Young Einsteins Science Party
-Spa Day or Yoga Party
-Adventure Rock-Climbing Party
-Les Petites Chefs Cooking Party
How about you, Dear Readers, what are your favorite birthday themes?

I just threw a "chef party" for my daughter's sixth birthday. I got aprons for all the kids with their names embroidered on them and we all made individual pizzas. The kids loved it (all 5 and 6 years old) and we painted unfinished napkin rings which they really had fun doing.
I'm doing a carnival-themed party for our son's fifth birthday in a few weeks, with a few carnival-inspired games and old-timey prizes as favors. I'd love to do a chef party, but couldn't sell the idea to my son.
I love Alice in Wonderland, A Mad Hatter Tea Party!
Last year we had a "camping party" for my 3 year old. The kids made s'mores in the fireplace (heavily supervised, of course), decorated their own hiking sticks (made from doweling with a string through a hole drilled in the top), and then went on a "hike." We set up a few tents in the yard for them to play around in afterwards and served hot dogs, a total camping food. It was a HUGE success, and very budget friendly.
My daughter is having her first "friends party" for her 5th birthday in 2 weeks. She decided she wanted a pink party and I have to say, although it being a little tricky to find pink things (think around Valentine's would be easier)it has been a lot of fun. I designed pink invites, we're having pink cupcakes, pink popcorn, pink candy, watermelon and strawberries, pink flowers and all the linens, decorations, loot bags and loot are in shades of pink. Of course everyone should be dressed in their best pink outfit :) I'm excited to see her face when she walks into the party room as sees all the pink!
Love these ideas!!! I am also planning a camp party for my boyfriend's daughter. It's her 7th birthday and she wants a "Camp Rock" theme, heavy on the "Camp." So we're planning a sleepover camp-in. I'm moving some furniture, setting up a tent in the living room, putting glow in the dark stars on the ceiling and making cool foamcore and green balloon trees. We'll also have a stage area near the TV for Camp Rock viewings and sing alongs. Activities will include decorating t-shirts and a backyard scavenger hunt. Should be tons of fun!!
For my daughter's 9th birthday we had a "pretty purple party". No explanation needed there, right?
So many great themes! Is there a blog out there dedicated to birthday parties? There totally should be...
Okay, all these ideas are really making me look forward to throwing our next party.
We've also thought about a Nancy Drew party. Spy gear is so much fun.
Also, had to share this A.A.Milne poem I LOVE and put on my daughter's 6-yr-old invites last year.

the best parties I've seen are on party perfect...there was the cutest princess themed party. check it out at http://partyperfectblog.blogspot.com
We have a blog where we introduce a different party theme each week and give ideas, suggestions and links. Some are adult parties, but we mainly focus on children's parties.
My favorite was our Sweet Tweet Birthday Tea.
We would love to have you visit.
