Goldfish
I wanted some artwork to hang over Oscar's and Betty's beds so I consulted with my kids and Ralph suggested a really big painting of a goldfish. I loved the idea. It's bright. It's gender neutral. It's friendly. Perfect. So we made one.
Ralph drew a sketch of what he had in mind. I bought a 40 x 30 canvas at Guiry's for $19.
We used acrylic paints — water cleanup makes them easy for kids to work with.
Based on Ralph's drawing, we sketched directly on the canvas.
And then everybody had a turn painting.
We think it turned out great (and extra big thanks to Ralph)! How about you?
I haven't done much painting since college and don't really know what I'm doing. I was wishing my mom (who is currently on a mission in Russia) was here directing this project.
P.S. — I haven't forgotten the post about how to build the toddler beds. Still working on getting some better images...

I think it looks beautiful! Go team!
I love this idea. My two (soon to be three) children share a bedroom and this is perfect.
I am by no means a professional, but painting is my hobby. I love finding prints online and then painting them myself. Also, I think it's fun to have my own artwork in my house. Actually I think you turned me on to Avalisa, which was the first print I duplicated.
Great job on the Goldfish, your son has more artistic talent than I do!
Impressed. Love. I had a fish room when I was a kid too.
This is wonderful! I'm very impressed!
Your finished product looks so whimsically polished! Oh, to be a pure, ambitious child again. I would never let myself attempt such a thing now.
This looks fantastic!!! What a creative family you have!
Ya'll did a great job!!
What a fun idea! I love that everyone got to help so they all have ownership of the project and can be proud of it : ).
Family-made art is the best. It's wonderful.

Wow...wish that was the goldfish in my head. Somehow I imagine mine looking like a stick person with fins...
Love it! You inspire me. I've got to tackle some art projects for my boys' room and you've given me the push I needed. Thanks!

Is that Ralph's sketch? It's really beautiful! And I love the finished product, too. Great way to include the kids (and Ralph def. has an artistic future, btw)

That looks fantastic. And now I am inspired...
YES! I've been toying with the idea of collaborating with my 3 yr old on a painting for his room and this post is the perfect little push I needed. Thanks for the step-by-step - makes it seem less overwhelming. And the painting is awesome!
i am so inspired! i have been thinking of what to do for artwork in my girls' room and this is perfect as they both love to paint! thank you!
Wow! You've inspired me! I'm going to do this!
My daughter and I will have to do something like this before the summer is over...thank you for the inspiration!
The painting turned out terrific!
Beautiful! And thrilling for the kids to participate too. Waaaay better than the impromptu handprints and scribble marks that decorated the walls of my kids' rooms.
:)

Thank you, thank you for this. My boys share a room and have different interests, so we went and bought four 12 x 16 canvasses and did two for each boy...We used the same colour palate for each, but made different pictures to reflect their interests (guitar and drum set for one, hockey stick and baseball for another)...thanks again for the great idea! Also, the canvasses were on sale for $2 each so it was a great budget decorating idea!
I love love love this! What a great thing to do with your kids. Way to go family!
