Ask Design Mom: Couples Baby Shower Ideas

Ask-Design-Mom-Question:
Hi Gabrielle. I’m a new reader of your blog and look forward to visiting it each day. Im in a bit of a creative rut as it relates to a baby shower I’m planning and hosting at our house. At the honoree’s request, it will be a couples shower in the evening with no games. Do you have any suggestions for ways we can set it apart from a typical baby shower and make it stand out? Thanks!
Cara

Answer:
Great question, Cara! I'll ponder some good ideas, and while I ponder, maybe some Design Mom Readers will chime in with their own good ideas.

who needs games? its all about the food ... just pick a fun theme like "baby sushi party" or "baby BBQ" or "desert shower" ... and then if you wanted to you could do something like get a blank journal and glue envelopes in the book and then have the guest write letters to be read at specific times that can be opened by mother/father and child. and then let people choose which one to write for. For instance you could have "first sleepless night" , "first big boo boo", "first trip without junior" etc ... or just let them chose when the letter should be opened.

My girlfriends threw me a fabulous "pamper the mommy" shower for my second boy. This could easily be adapted to be a "pamper the parents" shower. Inspire guests to shower the couple of honor with gift certificates to movie theaters and yummy eateries for date-night, spa gift certificates, his/her bath products, free babysitting coupons, etc. My friends also brought river stones and had each guest write a wish or message for me in sharpie on the stone. After the shower, they sealed the stones with a clear glaze and presented them to me as anchors in a huge vase of gladiolus. What a fun centerpiece of memories. Plus, I am STILL enjoying the fun gifts.

I LOVE the idea of a dessert party! Could you go wrong?
I also, like those frames that you can sign on the matte and put a picture in the middle (These can be found at craft stores). They can take that, with all their friends well wishes or funny tips, and put it in the baby's room. You could also have everyone just bring a giftcard or check (in an envelope, of course)and tie those to a tree. That way the parents can get exactly what they want. Especially, if they are already getting a lot of hand-me-downs or if this isn't their 1st child.
