Ask Design Mom: Baby Sling
Ask-Design-Mom-Question:
Hi Design Mom. I am going to be a first time mom next month, and I have really enjoyed your blog. I wanted to know if you have any recommendations on baby slings. I currently have the Moby Wrap, but it's a bit cumbersome to put on. I would like something a little easier to take on and off especially at night and with a newborn. Do you have any recommendations? Thanks, Maryann
Answer:
Smart question, Maryann. At first glance, the uninitiated might assume that a sling is a sling is a sling. But it turns out there are dozens of different options that appeal to and work for all sorts of different people.
For example, check out the gorgeous fabric choices at Puj Baby.
I'll be at the annual Gift Fair all day today, but I'll leave this question for helpful Design Mom Readers to answer. Guaranteed they'll have some strong opinions about what works and what doesn't.

Hotslings. Hotslings. Hotslings. :)
i really like hotslings too. they are a bit stretchy, come in different sizes, can be used a variety of ways and lots of cute designs.
My sister and I just ordered the Puj Sling last week. She received hers yesterday and said she loved it.
So excited to see Puj on Design Mom, I've heard nothing but good things about them. We're big fans of both of you!
I got a sling at drewbabydesigns.etsy.com
I didn't use it when my daughter was a newborn, but I can see I would have loved it. She's 19months old now so I only use it in those times when a stroller doesn't work and she can't walk around. It's awesome--and folds up flat in my purse!
My friend swears by her Ergo baby carrier. This link has a picture of the newborn option of using it like a sling, then it has other carrying options for when they're older. I want to check it out before my next baby. Glad to read about other kinds to check out too. http://www.ergobabycarrier.com/gallery/2/pages/image0.html
I had trouble with my Hotsling, it never fit quite right. I have a Rockin Baby Sling and a Nest sling I just picked up from Urban Baby Runway. I prefer ring slings over pouch slings, but I also love my Moby Wrap and Mei Tais that I purchased locally.

I adore my Maya Wrap. It is a ring sling (I personally found these to be much easier to adjust and much more versatile than a pouch) that will work from birth up to 30 pounds or so. I used mine with both my boys and just loved it. www.mayawrap.com Some of the fabric options are a bit too hippy-ish for my taste, but the basic black was a great match for me. The sling is breathable, comfortable, and portable.
maya wraps offers links to how to make them yourselves. i'm currently working on one (a sling one) for my sis. hopefully she'll like it!
I'm due with my fourth and can't wait to get a new native sling for this one. I've used slings similar to the maya wrap in the past, but found all that extra fabric and adjusting it to be cumbersome. I have a few friends that use the new native and love it. It's especially good for newborns. www.newnativeinc.com
I found a pouch sling easiest to use when my baby was tiny. Around 4 months, I switched to a ring sling (I also felt more confident as a sling-wearer by this time). The Moby is challenging, but it was GREAT when I wanted to carry him around the house for long stretches of time (very comfortable for us both), and when it was cold outside and I wanted to go for a walk. I still use my ring sling every day, and my son is nearly 24 months. Try www.zolowear.com for pretty designs.
I also tried hotslings and felt they were not as comfortable as other slings I've tried. I love my Ergo baby carrier--very easy on my back, but like it better for an older baby or child. When they're small it seems to swallow them up. My 2 1/2 year old still likes to be carried around in it sometimes just for fun. You might check out www.motherhood.com--they had a magazine article recently detailing different types of baby carriers--pros and cons, how to wear, etc.
My Puj sling is the easiet and simplest that I have found and I have tried them all - from the ring slings to the ergo to the baby bjorn. I use it for my 16 month old daughter almost daily. But, I could definitely see myself using it on an infant too.
i have an Ergo baby carrier...which i ADORE! i had back surgery a couple years ago and couldnt wear many of the slings/carriers i tried...until the ergo! i love it! i carry my children from birth in it...and now carry my 2 year old son in it as well.
best of luck!
I love my Puj sling. I am 7 months pregnant and can still very easily wear my sling to hold my 15 month old daughter. It is the best!
Hotslings are the best! Amazing fabric choices, and the best part - they come fitted to your size, so you don't have to mess with the "rings" and "tails" of some slings. Mine is reversible, and it folds up small enough to tuck into my purse. They are available at www.hotslings.com, but I happened to notice a limited selection available at Target the other day.
I'm another fan of Hotslings. I had a fleece one for winter, and got a cotton version for summer. My 15-month-old still loves riding around in it, and it's perfect for trips to estate sales or anywhere I can't let her run around or let her ride in a cart.
MAYAWRAP all the way. People stop me every day and ask about it. But no matter how great it looks, you have to get one that FITS. Slings with rings are adjustable so you can make them comfortable (and safe!) no matter how big your babe is. The Mayawrap is easy to get the hang of using. I have both a plain one and a really pretty pattern.
I have a sling from Sidecar Slings. I bought it because of their stylish fabric choices. If I had to do it over again, I would buy one with a adjustable ring, like the ones at Maya Wrap. Mine is adorable, and I do love it, but it is a little cumbersome getting on & off.
I love the Peanut Shell. Very easy to use, and super cute fabrics to choose from.
