Muji Department Store
My friend Denise, who does a great job of keeping watch for cool things I can post on Design Mom, sent me a link about a new Japanese department store opening in the United States in a few months.
It's called Muji. And from what I can see on their website, I'm thinking it's like a Japanese Ikea. What? Japanese plus Ikea? Be still my heart. Everything on the site, for home, for kitchen, for office, is sleek and orderly with pops of color here and there.
Check these City-in-a-Bag toys from their children's collection. Oh man. I can't wait till I can go through an actual Muji store.

oh these are so wonderful! I love wooden blocks!
I want to go to New York! So many cool places to visit.
I LOVE these.
I'm an IKEA addict out here in Phoenix and have long since longed to go to Takashimaya in NY. Be still my heart indeed, if there is such a combo in this Muji! Thank you!
sounds great! love those city kits. look at little london! :)
I am so glad you posted about Muji. I lived in Japan in '94 & then went back, on a quick trip, in the summer of '98. I went to a Muji store while on that trip and I LOVED it. I still use some of the items I purchased on that day, now almost 10 years ago!! It is so fun to see that they are coming to the U.S. Thanks for the post.
I love MUJI. You can get some of their stuff at the MOMA.
wow, a MUJI store in the U.S.?? that is great news!
unfortunately, moma only has the smaller stuff. I love their products, so spare and beautifully functional.
When I lived in Japan I was a regular at Muji. I cannot express how rad it will be when they open in the US. They are so fun- the Tokyo Muji had 3 floors with everything from cleaning supplies to decor & furniture to paper goods. The labels & packaging (Muji means "without a brand/label") are always classy-simple with a lot of smooth brown paper.
Finding this out is almost like winning a giveaway. Thanks!
I think that I need to move into that store and live there forever...
I can't get wooden blocks at Ikea anymore. I used to buy them and paint each shape a different color and give them as gifts (the tea sets w/ painted flowers on them are nice too...).
LOVE the blocks... I am sure we will have to wait for it to trickle over to my coast...but still...another reason to come to NY
