Ornament Tradition

Clever Kaila posted about a wonderful holiday tradition at her house: each year they add an ornament that signifies something about the past year. In her case, she just purchased a "new house" ornament to commemorate her recent move.

What a great idea. How fun to pull out ornaments like you're unpacking memories.

Just one question: what can this bird ornament symbolize? Because I want it.

my family had this tradition when i was young and i still do it. it's a great way to bring home a souvenir from a trip plus each year you get a few new ornaments. my mom gave us each our yearly ornaments when we got married so we had a decent collection to deck the halls with.

We do a version of the yearly ornament tradition as well. Each child gets his and her own. If we have done something fun as a family we get a souvenir ornament. I will keep the souvenir ornaments for the family tree, but they will inherit their respective ornaments whenever (and if) the want them.

This year I'm particularly excited because we purchased all our ornaments while at Santa's Village at the Arctic Circle in Finland.

As for your question, I think the bird could symbolize knowing what you want and getting what you want. It's beautiful!

The bird could mean that you're spreading your wings and becoming a star blogger! Just a thought.

i love the idea of the yearly ornament, and agree with factotum's idea of what the bird could mean!

Also love the kid's tableware -- I still use my strufelpeter knife, fork and spoon that I received from my Austrian relatives as a baby.... !

We do this too...I buy each kid an ornament each year and have a notebook that I keepin the ornament box to write down WHY I got it.... they will have a "starter" kit when they leave home. I also bring home ornaments when I travel.

For my two youngest kids, I buy two of the ornaments and we send one to their first moms along with WHY we chose it... but you could do the same thing with Grandparents....

Your bird could symbolize the trip to the GREAT WHITE NORTH that you took as a family. Or the launch of Design Mom.... or the arrival of Betty (pure as a dove....pure white....) I am scrambling......

I know I'm late on this one, but we have this tradition as well. I started it when my children were newborns. Each year getting an ornament to signify something special that happened to them that year, someplace we went or something that they were "into" that year.

When they got a little older and started to understand about Christmas, the tradition became that on the day that we set-up the Christmas tree the "elves" would come and finish decorating the tree at night while they slept and in the morning they would awaken to a beautifully decorated tree and a present from the elves, which was their special ornament to hang on the tree.

Once they were old enough to help decorate the tree, but still believe in Santa, the tradition has become that on the day we get and decorate the tree that night they leave their wish lists under the tree and the elves come and still bring their special ornament and take their lists back to Santa.

It is so special and they look forward to it so much. I get so sad when I think that I may have only a few more precious years of them believing. But I will continue the tradition and then when they are grown they will have a collection of ornaments to start their own traditions with. It's one of our favorite things to look back at all the ornaments when we decorate the tree and I know that I am making memories for them that will last a lifetime.

My mother never bothered with such traditions, but I think they are so important for children who loose their innocence all too quickly these days and grow up in the blink of an eye.

Oh, and I was too going to say your ornament would represent Peace for the new year.
