Thanksgiving 2008

Thanksgiving day and Thanksgiving weekend were satisfying. For the first time, we had a Thanksgiving dinner with just our family. No cousins, neighbors, Aunts or Uncles. I don't know that we'll do this from now on, but there was something simple and lovely about it. We're a big group even with nobody else there, so the table still felt full and overflowing. And because I wasn't hostessing, I could give the kids more attention. Teach them how to make pie crust and put together the stuffing.

The other part of Thanksgiving that I loved was the productivity factor. I think I've mentioned I'm a productivity junkie, and this weekend was a total fix. I don't think I stepped into my office once. Instead, we did things like rake the leaves, get the house in shape for Christmas. Decorate the tree. Make our first batch of snowball cookies. And see James Bond.

Because we were away from family this year, I was afraid we'd all feel some homesickness. Happily, we did lots of video-talking with cousins over skype — even my parents in Russia. I'm thankful for skype.

What did you do over the weekend that you loved?

I had several hours to quilt yesterday. I got a t-shirt quilt top all done and ready to quilt. It was snowing outside and warm and toasty in my sewing room.

I spent time with my kids. Did you know Jeff Andrus is in hospital and just had a bone marrow transplant. I have a link to his blog on my blog. If you remember him.

I borrowed a friend's vacation home in Vermont and took 4 friends with me. We played games, watched movies, rode the 4-wheeler, rested and relaxed (and I worked on a few projects)! We went to the live nativity pageant at the JS Birthplace which was wonderful. It was a memorable weekend.

hosted for the first time, which meant not having to go to my in-laws, put up our tree, watched a wonderstruck 2 year old check out the tree, mailed gifts to far away family, and had a diet coke. ;)

Yes, Skype is amazing! It's what makes my sister living in South Korea bearable :). Sounds like your Thanksgiving was wonderful - ours was too!

As usual, we were only four for dinner. After our annual football game in the backyard, parents versus boys, we sat down to a surprisingly nice dinner, followed by watching our annual Thanksgiving feature film, Seaching for Bobby Fisher (highly recommend!).

my mom, sister and i did some brainstorming for an upcoming craft fair, which is always a thrill when the three of us really get going. and for three days hardly no one left the house, or when we did we were together. glad to be in a family where we all get along so well.

We had a sweet little Thanksgiving with our immediate family too. It was so lovely and the food was all ready and warm at the same time! Loved that!

Hello! Happy Thanksgiving past! Happy season of light ahead! This year was an anomoly for use--we celebrated wtih family (and four days of houseguests). We ususally celebrate with just the four of us home alone together. It is incredibly special for us to spend the day cooking, setting the table, and playing games together. My children are 10 and 15 and I feel a creeping sadness that our days spent this way are numbered. Each year brings new joys but these days spent in our cozy cocoon are something I will always treasure.
