Weekend Update
Maude at Dylan's Candy Bar
Saturday was just right. We did the grocery shopping and a bit of straightening in the morning. Then we marked something off our we've-always-wanted-to-do-that list: we rode around the city for the rest of the day on top of a double-decker tour bus.
That's right. We packed a backpack full of snacks. We bought tickets for the whole family (kids under 5 are free). We boarded the bus near Times Square. And we toured the city all day long.
It was lovely. The weather was perfect. The views from our above-the-crowd-perch were fantastic. And we learned all sorts of things about the city we never knew before. Things like: there is a bigger ChinaTown in both Queens and Brooklyn than the Manhattan one, and the Financial District's several-ton Bull was left on Wall Street anonymously on Christmas Day, and where Madonna and Bono own apartments.
The tour buses make regular stops around the city and you can hop off and hop on as much as you'd like. New buses come every 10-15 minutes. We took an uptown tour first, stopping near The Plaza to buy pretzels and hotdogs, and then taking a walk over to Dylan's Candy Bar to refill our snacks for the downtown tour.
Bonus: The Project Runway Hershey dresses from last season were on display at Dylan's. Awesome!
When we finished our tours at the end of the day, we grabbed a pizza and headed home. Everyone was happy and tired. I'm so glad we did it. I can't believe how much we enjoyed it.

Thanks for this post! In all our wanderings around the city, I always find myself wondering about those double decker buses. I'd love to ride one sometime. Glad to get the Design Mom thumbs up!
Oh, and Dylan's Candy Bar sounds awesome. Must check them out. Have you been to Economy Candy in the Lower East Side? Also fun.
when i lived in manhattan my friend had her 30th birthday on the double decker tour bus. it was awesome. i was nervous we'd look too much liek tourists but we had a great time. glad you had fun!
fyi: all the double decker tour buses park in Hoboken after hours. There is a huge mother parking lot full of them there.
How fun! We are planning a trip to NYC this fall. This post makes me wish we were bringing the kids along. Well, almost! OK, maybe not. But I'll tell them all about it. ; )
We stumbled across Dylan's the first fall we were living in Manhattan and were so excited to see props from the fourth Harry Potter movie. I also love how all the music they play in the store is about candy. Sounds like a fun day!
What fun! And what beautiful nieces and nephews I have.
Don't you LOVE when wonderfully simply outings are wonderfully fun, as well? My family recently drug out a blanket and bought some $1 sundaes and watched the stars come out! We don't have double-decker buses where we live! :-) What a wonderful day!
ralph hates fashion.
How fun! We probably saw your bus as we were trekking around Manhattan Friday during our first-ever trip to NY. It was great.
Geesh those Blair kids are gorgeous! Wish I was there!
