My Green List — by Guest Mom Kristin Fine

So clearly I like lists…I can’t help it! Rather than fight it I have made another one to share with you all. I have been making an attempt over the past few years to green up our lives as much as possible…so here are my favorite eco-friendly discoveries.

1.
Dr.Bronner’s Magic Soap in Peppermint. This is the best smell ever, and I use it to clean everything. But my favorite day is floor washing day where you walk in my house and it smells so clean and fresh. Seriously. People actually comment on the house smelling good!

2.Stella McCartney has the most amazing skincare line ever!! The recyclable packaging is subtle and chic — great on the counter. And the quality of the products blew me away. I use the Milky Cleanser, both Elixirs and the 5 Benefits cream and my skin has never been softer and happier. I even tossed all my old products (Dermalogica, La Mer and Natura Bisse if you were wondering). Wait. Don’t worry. I didn’t toss them until I used them all up. Try Stella's stuff!! She has such an amazing philosophy as well…

3.Ode Magazine has great writing and interesting articles.

4.Clementine Organic Playdough Kits are incredible. First of all they (again — me with the smells) smell so good!! In fact they are actually edible. Though I am not sure how much nutritional value you’d be passing along! Anyhow. The tools they come with, the box they come in, the whole deal, a gorgeous gift.

5.Unpasturized organic milk. Takes a little looking to find, but this has been a happy change for all our tummy’s and avoiding those hormones is especially important for girls. Plus it actually tastes so much better I cannot begin to tell you!

6. Rockstar Organic Hair Products are superb. Organic, smell- sorry!! Like the beach and fruit, but not sickly sweet, just clean- and work. Especially the detangler — look at my guys curls — I know. Knots!!

7. We use our artwork as wrapping paper. I just keep it in a drawer and tie it with some gorgeous silk ribbon. The ribbon is so pretty it gets recycled, and the paper makes my kids so proud. For big gifts I copy my cool friend and use newspaper — looking for the right section for that person. And again, the special silk ribbon.

Post-baby I can't afford to buy it anymore, but Stella's stuff is unbelievably great.

I don't mean to cause a ruckus or anything, but I think I'll stick with the pasteurized stuff:

http://www.fda.gov/fdac/features/2004/504_milk.html

Highlights of the article:

"Pasteurization will destroy some enzymes," says Barbara Ingham, Ph.D., associate professor and extension food scientist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. "But the enzymes that are naturally present in milk are bovine enzymes. Our bodies don't use animal enzymes to help metabolize calcium and other nutrients."

"Enzymes in the food that we eat and drink are broken down in the human gastrointestinal tract," adds Ingham. "Human bodies rely on our own native enzymes to digest and metabolize food."

"Most of the native enzymes of milk survive pasteurization largely intact," says Sheehan, "including those thought to have natural antimicrobial properties and those that contribute to prolonging milk's shelf life." Other enzymes that survive are thought to play a role in cheese ripening."

"It is a violation of federal law enforced by the FDA to sell raw milk packaged for consumer use across state lines (interstate commerce). But each state regulates the sale of raw milk within the state (intrastate), and some states allow it to be sold."

Raw milk is the best, and I will support it and advocate it. You can get just as sick drinking pasteurized milk as you can drinking unpasteurized, so I say bring on the raw because it really does taste so much better and I would prefer not having any more hormones than I am already producing :)

I should have known that one would get some reactions. Look I feel everyone has to find what works for them- especially moms. That said, without quoting any studies here, I did do my homework and truly feel that my kids and myself are better off with the unpasturized milk. Luckily there are options out there, and we all can do our homework. Also studies and opinions distributed by the FDA, in my opinon, should be questioned. They have been allowing us to ingest things illegal in most other countries for years. Lets focus on design here though..don't want to drag Gabrielle's gorgeous site into the middle of a overly heated discussion!

Pasturized or not - a personal choice - but the point could be about finding food from sources with sustainable farming practices. :)

Organic milk really does taste better and I feel better giving it to my girls. My pediatrician's daughter started puberty abnormally early and she is freaking out now trying to backtrack, as in switching to all organic dairy. I think there are a lot of things out there we don't understand but I'm not going to take my chances on this one. Plus, like I mentioned earlier, it is more delicious! That's enough for me :)

P.S. Kristen, I can't get over that beautiful shadowbox with all the children's art! Gorgeous! Great guest posts this week~
