On the Calendar
Tomorrow night:
Brandi Carlile at the Fillmore
Friday night:
Dinner at Jane.
This month:
The Great Jack O'Lantern Blaze in Sleepy Hollow. The very same Sleepy Hollow that Washington Irving wrote about in The Headless Horseman. In fact, the Old Dutch Church in the book still stands there today. This will be our first year to attend the blaze. So excited.
Thanksgiving :
We won't have any family around this year and have decided we aren't up for a big flight. So we've been looking for good spots we can drive to and spend Thanksgiving weekend. Some place like a cabin in Vermont, or a farm in Pennsylvania. Then last Saturday I was getting my hair done and asked my stylist for advice on good vacation spots and she suggested Plymouth, Mass.
I was totally stunned. This will be our 7th Thanksgiving in New York, less than three hours from Plymouth, and we have never thought to visit the site. And now I am so delighted with the whole idea I can barely stand it. If you can't be with family, is there a better place to spend Thanksgiving than on Plimouth Plantation?

My family spent one Thanksgiving when I was young in Lancaster, PA in an old Amish farmhouse. It was pretty cool.
What a great idea! While visiting Boston one summer with my mom, we spent a day at Plimoth plantation. I think your kids will dig it, and you will too! All the staff are in costume and speak old English, and they don't break character (i.e. they don't know what a phone is or a bathroom, etc.). Overall, a fun experience, so I can only imagine it would be great for Thanksgiving.
Sounds like so much fun.
That's so funny...as I began your paragraph about Thanksgiving, I thought "they should go to Plimoth" and then you said it, too. They do a couple of variations on the Thanksgiving dinner: a Victorian one, an "authentic" one...you'll have a blast.
Second, I'm jealous that your hairdresser has helpful suggestions like that. I got my hair cut today and my stylist talked about how her ex-boyfriend, his dad, and his cousin all just went to jail. And ALL the details. But she does a great cut and highlight!
I love Brandi Carlisle. Have fun! Thanksgiving in Mass. sounds great, too.
How cool are those jack-o-lanterns? And I'm in love with your Thanksgiving idea. How cool is that??
Plimouth Plantation will be an amazing experience for your family! In fact, I know almost too much about it... once upon a time in my husbands younger days he was one of the reinactors- "Samuel Fuller Jr." to be exact and he worked several years at the Plantation.
I live 10 minutes from it now, we take our children all the time, it never gets old- it still is as fascinating to me today as it was on my third grade field trip.
Let me know if you want any information about the surrounding area :)
We went to the Thanksgiving at Plimouth Plantation last year. What a fun experience for our family and children! Love your design details too- we will be back to check out more!

Had to laugh...I just knew that was coming. I grew up in CT and I think two Thanksgiving we met our cousins from Boston at Plymouth Plantation. Good memories--we tailgated in the parking lot with cold turkey sandwiches. Hope you guys enjoy it as much as we did!
Ryan and I took a visit there during our time in NY - it was pretty fun. On the way up there I called my mom and asked if we had any ancestors on the Mayflower. We had three. I saw one of their names all over the place up there! So check into it - you might even feel a bigger connection! We were a little let down with Plymouth Rock - it's tiny and you just look at it down in a hole in the ground!
(I must add a sniff, sniff that when you say "my stylist" it doesn't mean me anymore!)
I am SO jealous you are going to see Brandi Carlisle. Love her!
You are darling. I love checking in on your blog & ideas. The Sleepy Hallow even looks incredible. And Thanksgiving at Plymouth?! That doesn't even need a comment.
We lived in NY before we had children and went into North Tarrytown (now Sleepy Hollow)every year at Halloween. There are lots of fun festivities but our favorite was the reading of The Headless Horseman in the Old Dutch Church, itself. The church is simply beautiful!
The reading is done by candlelight (the church has no electricity) and the story is enhanced by the fact that there are Hessian soldiers and Washington Irving, himself, actually buried in the cemetery outside! More about it here in the events PDF. This isn't really a kid's activity, as the church is small and the reading is long, but very enjoyable for adults!
At Christmas time, the Evening Candlelight Tour at Irving's Sunnyside estate is fabulous!
Thanks for bringing up good memories... sorry for the ramble.
Plimouth Plantation, for Thanksgiving... too perfect! Haven't tried that yet, we'll have to add it to our list!
Gabby - I visited Plimoth Plantation with Scott when he was in 5th Grade. It's great for kids and adults.
There is another place that looks charming too. Old Sturbridge Village, MA. We took the youth up there a few years ago for a mini-Youth Conf. They do all sorts of reinactments too. Thanksgiving....my favorite holiday! Is it the food or the giving of Thanks? I think both.
Wow that lantern blaze looks incredible - I hope every Design mom reader who goes to see it has a great time. It looks amazing.

I've been to the Blaze two years in a row and it's one of our favorite events. The carvings are like art and you can't help but say, "wow" constantly!
