Book of the Week: the Prince's Bedtime

Laurie M from
Reading Barefoot introduced me to Barefoot Books recently and I think I'm their new biggest fan. Things I love about the Barefoot collection:

• Excellent illustration. I especially love the sewn pieces by Clare Beaton. — really great details.
• Not at the chain stores. It's nice to know there are still independent booksellers.

• Great stories. We've seen 6 or 8 books from Barefoot so far, in age ranges from baby through 10, and my kids have loved each one.

But I think the Barefoot book that has been getting the most attention at my house is The Prince's Bedtime, written by Joanne Oppenheim and illustrated by Miriam Latimer. My toddler likes the rhyme-y-ness off it. My oldest likes the cleverness of it. And I love the drawings. The King and Queen look for assistance from all sorts of people to help the Prince fall asleep, but it's the kindly old woman who know just the trick.

i agree, we have long been Barefott fans. I would also add that they include a lot of racial and cultural diversity in their titles. Something that is, unfortunately, still pretty rare.

Oh, we adore Barefoot Books at our house! Our favorite by far is "One Moose and 20 Mice" by Clare Beaton. As a seamstress, I could just read that book over and over again. We live in Boston, not too far from their flagship store near Harvard Square. It is absolutely one of my kids' favorite places to go. It has a king chair for the storyteller's seat, various tents the kids can play in, baskets of books everywhere, headphones for listening to books on tape and to top it all off--oreo cookies for a snack. It's great fun! Oh, and did I mention the store is decorated in the most creative and fun color scheme and style? You'll just have to visit sometime!

My friend Michelle has told me great things about your site. I'll have to find this book for my little one--I love some of his books as much as he does. One of our favorites right now is "The Gruffalo."

The Prince's bedtime is 8 on the dot. The queen says so [wine in hand @ 8:15], The king.. has no say whatsoever, he obeys the queen..

[I think this may be the sequel..]

On a serious note, the books sound great, I'll keep an eye out for them.
