Open Shelving in Kitchen
In the foot-high stack of mail that awaited me after my trip, my favorite thing was the new issue of Home Companion. I especially loved the photos in the Pool House, That Is article.
I think I would really like open shelving in my kitchen. I'm drawn to it every time I see it. Do you think my landlord would mind very much if I remove the fronts of my cabinets?

Great look.
I love open shelving as well. Why hide all the beautiful dishes? However, I would insist on a closed pantry... I can't keep everything that tidy.. and I'm not sure that I want to see all the bags of potatoe chips I drag home. :)
I love them, BUT. We had them in our last house. We ended up putting things like tupperware in the bottom of our china cabinet!!! It does look beatiful, but you have to be creative about where to put the "ugly" things to make it look good.
I was just thinking the same thing as the last comment. I love the look. But my attempts at open shelving have started off well, then come to the - wait, where does all my crap go? point. I just opened my cupboards and realized there's only about 40% that would look good openly displayed. A lot of stuff in this picture is purely decorative, not functional. So if you have room to have both decorative and functional areas, I think it could work and look really great(probably not the case in NY though)!
I love this look! But, wonder if I really want everyone seeing my mismatched dishes. I guess it is a good excuse for new ones, and would solve our problem of what to do with our 1970's cabinets.
we moved into an apartment with a tiny tiny kitchen and all the upper cabinets are open shelves. turns out it's so much easier to not have doors in a small space.
I quickly got over my initial 'ack my dishes don't match' and started loving it. most of our groceries are from the international markets and we also use a lot of tea so it looks pretty cool to have all those funky labels and tins showing, plus it actually goes with our cheap chinatown dishes of which we have three different styles.
I think you should go for it if you can remove the doors and store them without causing damage. I wouldn't worry so much about not having decorative stuff, just be creative with what you've got!
Open shelves make the kitchen look bigger, but they are one big pain in the you-know-where to keep clean. If you love dusting or the look of dusty shelves, go for it. After two remodels, I can honestly say that open shelves are not for me. I speak from experience. But then, if I could hire a full time duster.....then I LOVE THEM.
Beautiful! Wow, the colors and the design--love all of the fun baby items. I want one of each...
That kitchen is beautiful...but it is also too "picture perfect." In reality, would you really want the details of every nook and cranny seen in the kitchen? or the dust bunnies in cabinets?
I have to agree with some of the other comments about where to put the "ugly" stuff, like the rubbermaid containers, the extra items, the piled up pie pans that don't match anyway...
I like the look, but I know my kitchen wouldn't look like the pictures.
